Last night my DD was pitching for her jv team. Her coach kept telling her that she was striding out too far and she needed to shorten her stride up. What does this even mean? She has never been told this before and she wasn't throwing a dropball.

Don't argue with coach. Coach is always right.

Have DD nod her head and say "yes Coach!". Then DD needs to focus, drive even further and throw even harder into the catchers glove.

We all know that (serious) pitchers work with a pitching coach, or a parent who a sponge for the stuff talked about here and certain other places. I always get a kick out of high school (or other) coaches who walk up and implicitly proclaim themselves as the pitcher's new pitching coach.

Her coach could be trying to fix:
a) push leg being left behind
b) timing/getting the stride foot down earlier in relation to the arm circle

I'm speaking from experience on this one. DD IR pc 7 months per yr, HS coach 3wk preseason then 2 month season. PC signed players over the yrs, HS played college. Multiple things, could be legit as mentioned earlier timing or real mech issue that shows up in game but not lesson. Could be HS either heard or did something that a shorter stride fixed. Some teach shorten stride for DB while others teach same stride chg body angles. Who is creditable, what is to be accomplished?

There are coaches at all levels that think they know more than they do...I have even seen some HORRIBLE D1 P5 coaching.

my dd is 5'3" and strides out to about 6'. it is difficult for her to go beyound that without going airborne and become illegal, or maybe when she develops really strong grasshopper-type legs :)

DD has a problem with her arm circle timing when she does try to overstride - arm is at 9 at foot plant and drive foot gets left behind. timing is off and the pitch turns to mush.

very possible so i wouldn't rule what the HC is suggesting, just yet.

And there are just as many pitching coaches and parents that know next to nothing about high level pitching mechanics. Parents are paying money so they don't want to hear that they are actually hindering their daughters pitching progression.

What if the high school coach is also a parent, pitching coach, former player or pitcher. Does the softball universe explode from this conundrum of who is supposed to know what?

It's hard to say without video. Perhaps she is striding out too far.
