I thought it would be interesting to find out when my fellow bucket Mom's and Dad's realized it was time for gear, or time to find a catcher for their daughter. When did your daughter out throw or out spin your eyes or ability's? For me it has not happened yet but getting close. My daughter is 16 throws low 60s and is an up ball kid. I think and truly understand you down ball parents might gear up quicker than us up ball parents but just curious.

12U here, I gear up during lessons, because who the heck knows where the ball is going to go half the time. There is tough and stupid and after losing two toe nails and a couple deep shin bruises and many close calls to places that give me bad dreams, I was being stupid.

mine is 11 and no gear yet other than a catcher's mitt. Biggest fear is her throwing one when i am not looking. Saw it happen to a dad last year. Not very pretty. Hope the speed gets me one day, but i think i have a pretty good bit of time left before that happens.

As soon as they start on the drop--shin protectors and a mask. Especially when the ground if uneven or the front end of home plate is exposed. I almost always sit side saddle.

I used to poke at a friend of mine who was completely geared up when catching his daughter.. His daughter had lesson after me and couldnt make it so i offered to catch her. I am not judging for sure because if she was mine, shin guards and some sort of foot protection would have been a must. As I said before my daughter is an up kid and a righty. His daughter was a down kid and a lefty. Needless to say she ate me up a tad.

Clear communication is helpful. I remember a close call with older DD when it was getting dark one evening. I thought she was throwing a change and almost didn't get my glove up in time to save my forehead!

My dd has never really been a full time pitcher. Just kind of worked on it from time to time. Saw some circle time but not a lot. She had to take a year off for medical reasons at 14 years old. When she came back after the year off, and got cleared by docs, she immediately wanted to start throwing. Even after not throwing for a year, the increase in age also increased some speed. First session back, after a few pitches, I grabbed DD's fielding facemask and put it on. No idea how fast she throws (i would guess somewhere in the 50s) but is sure seemed to get there quick.

Funny you should ask this question now. I just learned the hard way yesterday. Don't get me wrong I've taken many off the shins but due to the unseasonably warm weather were in the Midwest we got some outdoor practice rather than indoor this time of the year. As usual to keep things fun we work on different pitches after the normal practice session. Worked on the cross fire drill for the curve for awhile then first pitch after sitting back on the bucket off the plate then my knee and directly to the chin and split it wide open. Needless to say time for gear

Right Here For Now
When DD started going to BH years ago and he told her the FB is a dirty word. She would be replacing it with her drop. After several weeks it was really dropping. I took one to the shin that chipped my bone. The next day I ordered gear. To this day, I still have approximately a 3" sliver of shin bone missing someplace down there.
