Initially, the chiro. We love our chiro, she is awesome. But we're going to the ortho this week since it's still bothering her.

This weekend was terrible. She was feeling fine so they let her pitch. The first inning she was really on, 3 up 3 down against the Impact (one of the big names in these parts). But the 2nd inning I could tell she was hurting and they pulled her, and didn't let her pitch the rest of the day. She cried :( She is not an emotional cryer over softball. She'll cry if she gets hit by a ball or something but she doesn't cry over errors or striking out or walking batters. So I know she was really upset. Pitching is her favorite thing to do in the world. It breaks my heart. My gut tells me she's not going to be pitching for at least a few weeks though :(

Injuries are the worst! Even worse than being in a terrible slump because you can work on the issues and teach resiliency. When my DD pitcher was hurt we spent the time we would have been doing drills by watching videos and games and talking about the mental part of pitching. We talked about batter tendencies and weaknesses based on observations and previous pitches etc. We still call pitches for her but pretty soon she will take some of that responsibility as part of development. It helped her stir craziness by staying in the game. When she came back she was more dominant than ever because of her confidence as a result of our mental game discussions.

I hope you get the problem figured out and rehabbed soon! Better February than mid season for sure! Good luck!

Very true. We signed up for several A tournaments towards the end of the season and we NEED her pitching in those. Right now, eh. We can make it work. Those are some really good ideas for helping pass the time, however long it ends up being. Thanks!

Lower back pain on the non-throwing side is something worth looking into. We went through this last winter. I'm a nut and was worried about a pars fracture, since it's such a serious issue. Knowing about it and taking precautionary measures may be the reason I have no "story" to share. Just be aware, ad encourage her to be honest. She shouldn't feel any need to "suck it up" if she's experiencing back discomfort. Could be nothing, but it could be a serious problem.

We've been emphasizing that in a major way. Last week she said, "If it hurts I'm not going to tell you, because then you won't let me pitch." Um, no. So I told her if that was how it was going to be she just wouldn't be able to pitch at all whether it hurt or not. It's so hard with young girls to find the balance between "don't be a whiner" and "you have to tell us if something really hurts." The good news is, her pitching makes it obvious as soon as it starts to hurt. Her location is noticeably off and she has a lot less drive. But we haven't let her pitch at all this week. We have the ortho appt tomorrow so we'll know more then. My gut says it won't be anything major; I hope I'm not just being optimistic.

The ortho says she has left iliac crest apophysitis. He said to give her 2-3 weeks off pitching and she should be good as new. We already planned on that so I guess I could have saved my copay but the peace of mind is good. I guess it's largely growth related, which makes sense because the kid has grown a foot in the past few months, I swear. None of the pants she wore in the fall fit her now. Anyway. So this weekend and next she'll play but not pitch. The following we're off. By the time we come back, hopefully she'll be good to go. I also have a therapeutic massage scheduled for her tomorrow. She is very excited. She's never had a massage before. I was 23 when I had my first massage. My kids are so lucky.

Well not the best news but not the worst! Take all the time she needs....she will come back stronger if allowed to completely heal. In the meantime, she can still work on ir drills that are stationary.... best wishes. When I read your post, I just knew it was growth related...she looks older in your newer profile pic....

It's crazy how fast they grow at this age. My older one is going to be 13 in June, and one day I looked at her and realized, wow, she isn't a little kid anymore. I remember walking by her and squeezing her arm, just like a "hi" gesture, and she was so substantial. She'd always just been this skin and bones little kid. Now the baby sister is doing the same thing. Time needs to slow the heck down.
