Hi all, first question for me on the site:

What drills do you use when trying to help a pitcher slow down their change-up? I have a few that turn their change-up over similar to a flip but without releasing hand and figures upward, a couple that use circle grip and turn it over, and a couple that use the Palm Ball grip and just open their hand up on release. Thanks in advance!

Just curious...How much slower are you trying to go than her fastball? I ask because I see a lot of young pitchers try to throw their CU too slow, which typically makes control very difficult. On a too-slow CU, good hitters - even at 10U - will have time to re-set and crush.

Welcome Ccat. I have experienced the same thing with younger girls as Eric. Most throw the flip change and completely lob the ball in. In my observations, around second year 12U, the better hitters recognize the hand turning over and wait on that pitch. Still fools some.

IMO, the circle change is a good pitch. The arm circle and speed of the arm circle shouldn't change from FB. The release is what slows the pitch down. Have them practice turning the hand over at release and the last thing they should feel is the pinky finger releasing the ball. Hope that helps. There will probably be some more knowledgeable pitching gurus that can explain it better. Good luck.

My DD throws that kind of change up and when she wants to slow it down she grips the ball tighter and it makes the muscle in her arm tighter and her effort to throw her arm stays the same but it's in fact slower because the muscle is tighter.

I bought the change up video on rick pauleys site. Well worth the $5. Highly recommend. Pauleygirlfastpitch.com

DD throws the horse shoe change. Ques have always been throw the CU as hard as your FB and let the grip do the work.

Dd throws the horseshoe also, the key is to lead with the hand into IR. Turns it into a push, rather than a whip. Slows it down nicely.

Looking to get 8-10 mph difference. Most seem to be getting only about 3-5 which tend to be the ones turning it over as they throw it similar to a drop ball. Some on the other end are getting way to much which is like what your quote is saying....
