DD just joined a travel team (10u, DD is 2007 DOB), while practicing pitching last night, coach asked to video her footwork to send to HS coach that is involved with the TB program, wanting to make certain it was legal (side note, nice of her to ask first, of course I said yes, want whatever guidance DD can get). The potential issue seems to be as she is starting her motion, she steps back with left foot, before striding forward with it. Is this an illegal pitch?

I honestly thought when DD worked out with this team a couple of times, she might be 3rd or 4th option for pitcher, but she is actually throwing just about as good as any girls they have currently (still looking for 1-2 more girls). first practice, she pitched better than I have ever seen her, only really practiced pitching half a dozen times since last spring (played travel soccer in fall, swimming all winter). kinda blew me away, I guess a growth spurt couple with swimming developing her muscles. still a little inconsistent, but throwing pretty well overall (about 1 in 5 pitches gets pretty wild).

Depends, the pitcher can step back or have the stride foot behind the rubber in HS, but not most travel ball...

Yes, it is illegal. My daughter buts her left foot against the back of the pitching rubber and it sometimes loses contact during rockback. She has been called illegal a few times for it.

If her foot loses contact with the rubber before she strides forward it is illegal in tournament play. A lot of high school rules allow it so be careful w what the HS coach says

IME with 10U travel so far, they hardly ever call illegal pitches anyway. I've lost count of how many girls we've played against that pitched illegally. Every coach we've played with just lets it go. On our team in the spring we had a team complain about one of our pitchers. She was like our #5 and we put her in because we were way, way up, then they complained. Even though the coach complained and he was right (she did pitch illegally) they still didn't do anything about it. Just FYI, not that I'd count on that because you never know. It does sound illegal.

LL is think is legal too.

It is illegal in all alphabet organizations that I know of. If your DD is stepping back it is better to,stop in now so she pitches the same everywhere.

I am not an expert on the subject, but I believe it is legal for a pitcher to lose contact with the pitching rubber in HS ball, but it is NOT legal per ASA, so most pitchers do not do it because they do not want to throw one way for HS and one way for TB.

thanks, we will start working to correct this ASAP. Absolutely only want her to have one set of mechanics, and want them to be legal in all games she will play in.
