Will be hard to beat the new Pixel C, but well above your price point. Samsung stuff is good, both the camera and display, but they load so much junk on those things that it can cause you battery and performance issues. Not sure I'm providing any value to you...sorry. But if you bent my arm, I would suggest the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2; though it is slightly above your price point, and is still only 32GB. But the Android devices allow for more external storage options.

Thank you. Headed out to shop and compare in a bit.

Ken, you can buy most phones today "unlocked" and without a data plan at Best Buy or on Amazon or eBay. It would operate the same way as a small tablet, you could connect to Wi-Fi when you get home and post or send files and emails from it. It would have a camera that would do the job you need--AND fit in your pocket. And you would pay $0 a month for "service" since you aren't on an operator service plan.

If you go that route, you could get an older model iPhone for a decent price -- a refurb iPhone 5S bought directly from Wal-Mart.com is only $149.

You could also check out operators that offer relatively cheap but good (usually Android) phones with Wi-Fi-only or Wi-Fi plus a small amount of data service plans, I'd recommend Republic Wireless or Freedompop.

The point about being able to add external storage (SD-type card) to many Android phones is a good one given your focus on using it for video.

This what two of my kids have - iPhone 4s that they basically use like iPods (yes some kids today still don't have the most expensive, recent smart phones). Full use of the camera, just can't download pics or email them until they are on wifi. You just need to post on a bulletin board at work or something that you are looking to buy a used iPhone 5 that someone isn't using and then usually someone will offer to give you one that they have sitting around. :)

Great idea! My phone is an older S4 that i use religiously for pitching, hitting, downloading gifs from here(hundreds). 16g with a 32g SD card. So handy to have all that info right in your pocket

Do the Samsung and iPhone 5's shoot in slow mo?

Went shopping for an iPad and all the version 4's had been pulled by Apple for two months. The store staff said it likely means a new model is about to be released. Really bummed and had hoped to have something better than the old point-and-shoot for a clinic today in Tillamook, OR. When I went to grab it for the first set of kids, the person hosting said he brought his iPhone 6! Saved the day! Loved that thing! What an amazing tool!

I think my husband's 5 would still show a blur of the hand position so he used it to record DD but then I think he used Coach Eye to look at the videos piece by piece. Where as when I got my 6 we were pumped to see that the slo mo would show you every piece and wasn't blurred when you stopped the video. I don't know that this will hold up in a court of law because my memory isn't what it used to be and this has been over two years now but that is what I recollect.

So Cal
I have been pretty impressed with the iPhone 6 camera. The 240fps slo-mo ability makes it a pretty awesome compact device for mechanical analysis purposes.

Lazy poster here....So I'm going to run in the room, say some stuff, and run back out: Former professional photographer here that is generally frustrated by camera and phone manufacturers that lie. When done properly, if you use a frame rate (somewhat similar to shutter speed...But modern video has both...So, confusing) that is too high for the available lighting, your video or still shot should be dark. That's how it used to be and the physics have not changed. However, the modern shooter is possibly lazy and potentially inexperienced. They would never stand for such a thing. So manufacturers cheat by bumping up the gain (amplification) and blurring frames together in order for shots to be acceptable on the "Facebook level" (the unfortunate rating system for modern photography). All of this is said in order to say: if you don't have proper lighting on the subject, you will get grainy and possibly blurry shots. Some devices are better than others to push the limits. But ultimately, bright sun on the player with little background lighting is best. When inside, powerful lighting is generally needed. Devices that have control over aperture, shutter speed, and ISO are the absolute best, but have a learning curve. In most cases, that means a compact camera or better, rather than a smart device.

Hope this helps (more importantly, I hope it doesn't make it worse.)

The more info the better! My little Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS does a wonderful job with average gym light--it's just so hard to navigate with my clunky fingers and the screen is kinda small. If you can suggest an replacement--I'd be glad it check it out.

I picked up an iPhone 6 and was able to keep my carrier, which has been about $15 per month (no data.) It has 128 GB of memory which is a huge plus! Gonna miss the compact flip phone, but the iPhone is going to so much easier use than my old camera!
