Just curious as I have no idea.
ERA of 3.0 seemed high to me but her coach said it was good. I just don't know if he was humoring me or felt it wasn't worth discussing.

DD was one of 2 pitchers on her HS team last year. the other pitcher was not as "strong" as DD but to everyone's surprise had considerably better stats than DD. DD threw mid 50's where the other girl threw mid-high 40's and didn't have a much in the way of other pitches, but she could throw strikes and the strongest hitting teams had great difficulty hitting her.

I think her ERA was near 1 and maybe even below. DD was at 3.0

when she gave up hits, they never hit her hard either. when DD gave up hits, the ball was usually moving pretty good.

Honestly, I think last season was an anomaly but regardless DD needs to improve.

ERA isn't the greatest stat for determining how effective a pitcher was or how effective they will be. Much like the 'wins' stats it doesn't mean a whole lot.

I use FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching). GameChanger calculates FIP as one of their stats if you use that.

Others will chime in I'm sure. HS comparisons can be oranges to lemons. 1 Era is dang good. The way I read it is your DD probably is comparable to most of the other pitching on other teams. The teams batting against the 40mph pitcher couldn't adjust. Put her against better batters in terms of they adjust to slow pitchers same girl gets rocked. HS team is picked by what attends said school. A 3 era here is great. Same pitcher moves to hs in so cal and she may be looking at an 8 or greater era. Moves to school in rural somewhere and it drops to 1.5 era. I really only see era as measuring tool of improvement or regression as it changes for that pitcher against say her conference that yr. I will add your DD may have more potential but the other is holding teams to 1 earned run giving your team a better chance of winning then that would be who I pitched until something changes. I've seen some of the worst mechanics and goofy delivery be the most effective at younger ages, just like HE. But sooner or later the cream rises. I dare say over time your DD may rise beyond the other.

ERA's will vary widely depending on if it's the pitchers parent or a fielders parent keeping book.

Our HS pitcher had a 2.07 ERA last season and we went pretty deep into playoffs. But it's so much more than just ERA, a lot has to do with the team standing behind her. The thing about HS around here is that one town might only have 1 player who plays club ball and another (like the one I live in) has most of the starting 9 playing for pretty well known organizations.

Funny thing is, it looks like we were both knocked out of playoffs by the same team last year

If your ERA is 3.00, you are almost certainly a pretty good/better-than-average but not outstanding pitcher relative to the competition you are playing.

Travel teams and high school teams average about 1 run per inning. Let's say that's 6-7 runs per 7 innings. Most coaches would be happy to have a pitcher who allowed only 3 earned runs per 7 innings, and so I think it's fair to call that a good (but not great) pitcher.

As riseball mentions the quality of the competition faced can have a bearing on ERA, along with the quality of the defense behind the pitcher. A lot of routine plays on a good TB team become singles and doubles in HS ball, that said here is my $0.02...

Anything less than 1.0 is excellent
Less than 2.0 is very good
Less than 3.0 is good
Less than 4.0 is acceptable
More than 4.0 needs improvement

Thanks for the replies. That makes sense. DD is a good, (not great) pitcher but she is very smart and usually good at outsmarting the competition.

The comment about the fielding being bhind you was spot on. When DD pitched, our IF gave up at least two errors per game for thefirst half of the season and we lost those games by (1) run.

Also DD and pitcher #2 were on same TB team. DD was usually #1 and P2 was about #4 of 5. Very nice kid but good teams lit her up.

Murphdog- Our last playoff game was amazing. We were ahead of the #1 seed by one run going into the bottom of 7. That was the inning they started to figure out the other pitcher. (2) outs, runner on 3B and an illegal pitch scores the tying run. The momentum had shifted tho, we didn't score any more and they wasted no time posting the winning run. I might know your Varsity (and freshman) coaches. He is very good and has the unique ability to inspire his players to want to win. I have AC'd for him when our DD's were younger and again in U18 TB. (Freshman coach is his DD).

Thanks again for all the replies, I have a much better understanding now!
