For this particular pitcher, the walk-in drill has done more for her than any other drill. Why? From the start, she needed the rhythm it provides. Put her in static drills and she gets clumsy.

Back on the dirt...
Do you know how fast she is throwing vs regular? Just curious.

She looks good. Great whip and drive. (Im not a professional ) I'd be happy if I could get mine to get loose like that. What age group?

This is a great drill especially if you are indoors. If you are going to have a productive session you must get really loose. Most pitchers never get there. Couple of weekends ago Jake and I worked with 18U pitchers at a HS field. Before they started their typical warmups we had them do some serious progressive long toss. Something Jake does every time she sets foot on the field. The result was both pitchers said that their arms felt different and had never gotten that loose. They threw harder, longer, and had much more movement than usual. I think we made believers out of them.

In the first video, she is doing the drill wrong.

She is moving forward after throwing the ball. She is supposed to stop.

Well, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree, Sluggers. If she's doing this aggressive walk-in drill wrong because she's moving forward after throwing the ball, then Sarah Pauly is also doing the drill wrong, as she is moving forward after throwing the ball.

While continuing forward is not what you want to see in regular pitching, the extra momentum you generate in an AGGRESSIVE walk-in drill results in a little continuing forward after throwing the ball. Otherwise, one could argue that you could be even more aggressive with the drill.

NOTE: I would prefer to see more forward lean in that first (aggressive) walk-in clip. She's a little to perpendicular going into her push-off. Sarah is leaning forward from the start. One of the downsides that I see in the walk-in is that there is a tendency for it to reduce the forward lean.....unless it is constantly stressed.

One of the Primary purposes of the aggressive walkin is to generate more energy(faster forward drive). To transfer that energy the pitcher needs get resistance when the stride leg plants.....so it would be great to totally stop all that faster forward energy....but nearly impossible to do.....thus you will see a little walkout after release.

In response to an earlier question, I typically see about 2 mph increase in speed with an aggressive walkin......however, I must say that if the pitcher is prone to excessive forced opening and no hip rotation in their standard mound pitch, they typically will get minimal increase with a walkin pitch.

Why do a drill where it is OK to have bad mechanics? That just reinforces bad mechanics.

The extra energy generating from walking forward results primarily in torque...Sarah is spinning at release.

The physics and anatomy doesn't change because a person is walking forward and throws a pitch.

Would it be OK to finish in a hello elbow if you are walking forward?
