For all who have daughters pitching in college or on the way to that goal. How much did your daughters pitch in the off season. My daughter is 14 year old freshman who has dreams of pitching in the big 10. We are trying to decided what is reasonable to reach her goals without trashing her arm. She is currently taking a 4 week bread as here only rest since march. We are really pushing physical training this off-season as well
Thank you for your help

4 weeks should be fine, but I prefer slow and steady throughout the year. 14YO DD takes about 2 weeks off during December and 2 weeks off during early August and a few 1 weeks for spring break, family vacation etc. We live in SoCal so she basically plays 11 months out of the year.

Your DD has to hit it hard in January.

Between now and then, have her throw a little. There is a bunch of events going on that are important...Thanksgiving, Christmas, Holiday Shows at school, parties, etc. Try to work in a practice once a week or twice a week. Nothing too intense, just something.

Come January, she needs to get on a 4 to 5 day a week practice schedule.

DD lessons last yr winter. SPRING school ball here finished late may. TB this summer 9 weekends played tournys 6 of those weekends avg 15 innings per tourny. 4 more tourny this fall with lessons and bucket time between weekends and tournys. Had springbreak and vac in this time period. after last tourny gave her 3wk off. WILL be starting back in 1wk with lesson and bucket tI'm for twice a wk of practice. After holidays will move to 3x wk then 4x then HS wiLL start. Somewhered on here I read where a total of 6-8 wks off a yr is good. I also am learning the mental time off is good.

DD (12, turning 13 in March) goes fairly hard year round...TB tryouts were mid-Sept and we had worked extremely hard after spring/summer season ended mid-July to get ready. We have thrown consistently since mid-Sept but only 1-2 times per week for a "break", and if anything she has gotten stronger during the recovery - I was actually amazed by this. She's been doing some core & strength training plus some other sports. I doubted PC when he said take some time off in the fall but it's been very positive I think. Now fall P&C sessions with her organization are starting and she will be going 3-4 times a week. Overall I think the "break" (we never really stop; there is no way she has gone a 7-day period without pitching in the last year) has been good.

My DD takes off from Thanksgiving until the end of January. She still works out, but no pitching. She will start throwing again in February and we play our first games in March, with the first meaningful games in late April.

How long does it take a pitcher to get back into "game ready" shape? When does a team play "meaningful games"? I would suggest using the answer to those two questions to determine when to "hit it hard". In GA we play HS ball in the fall, so the answer may be different for pitchers who play HS ball in the spring. In spring TB we do not play meaningful games until the end of April/May.

What's an offseason?

When DD was going through the recruiting process, she attended winter college softball camps and showcases, so she did not get a break. She ended up pitching @ 20 months straight, and we could tell that she was wearing out towards the end.
