I have noticed that my daughters rise ball spin looks the same as her screw ball spin. Does grip affects the spin? How can you get the spin closer to a bottom to top spin?

Lauren Haeger Rise, Screw and Change Up. What I was wondering about was the difference between her rise and screw.

I think you can probably find some long threads on here on whether a RB can have bullet spin, back spin or somewhere in between. You are going to get a variety of answers and probably links to a few different top level pitchers with different spins. My DD used to throw 6-12 and it was probably 15 MPH slower than her FB so we gave up on that and have settled on an angled back spin that is probably 5-11 to 4-10. For my DD this spin is only slightly slower than her FB. If she is busy with games we don't focus on spin for a while she can get lazy and start throwing it with bullet spin and then we move in close and work on spin and back it out again and get back to it. But you should get lots of varying advice.

Does she get any movement from the 4/10 spin that you didn't see with the 6/12?

Don't chase unicorns. Your DD needs:

1) Great control
2) Good speed (60+ MPH)
3) The ability to change speeds.
4) One really, really good breaking pitch.

Parents get into this thing of chasing "one more pitch" when they need to be working on control. If your child does not have enough control of a breaking pitch to throw it with the bases loaded, nobody out and the score tied in the the bottom of the 7th, then the breaking pitch is worthless.

Control means that she can put the ball on the edge of the strike zone 99% of the time. If she is throwing the ball down the middle of the plate once or twice a batter, her control is *NOT GOOD ENOUGH*.

Changing speeds is so important...and yet few people spend the time perfecting the change.

It is hard, boring, repetitive work to perfect a changeup and a breaking pitch. But, that is the work that makes the difference between a good pitcher and an also-ran.

My interest has to do with speed and RPS. Why when my daughter attempts to throw a rise ball, she get more spin and speed than her fastball? To me, I see DD throwing nothing more than a high fastball with a screwball spin.

What do you call "Screwball spin"? Bullet spin? I've never anyone throw a pitch with "screwball spin" (3-6 or 6-3) at anything close to 55MPH.

The screwball pitchers I've seen (and I've only been following the game for 30+ years, so I haven't seen every pitcher) simply steps left and throws right. The pitch has a different release than other pitches, so it throws the batter off. But as far as actual movement...nada.

The best way to see this is to pull up a softball screwball video on youtube, cover up the pitcher, and watch only the ball.

Here is a video of when my DD started working with the rise ball. Before any comments are made about the glove swing, we have worked on that since this video was taken. A little back story about this. We were at the end of our lesson when my daughter wanted to show Rick Pauly what she called her knuckle ball, which we learned that day was not a knuckle ball but more a grip commonly used in the mens game. Pauly wanted to see if she could use this grip with other pitches, which she did with the curve and drop ball. Then, he wanted to see if he could get her to throw a rise ball with this grip.
