As some of you may know, we've been working on bent arm circles and adduction. She's saying her Lat muscles and shoulder hurt her now when she pitches. I know shoulder pain shouldn't be there and I'm not sure what's going on there but I wonder if she is using her Lat muscles for the first time pitching and just "feeling it." Anyone ever experience this?

The lats will probably be sore from use and is most likely just regular muscle fatigue. The shoulder pain is more concerning, but shoulder pain is a little vague. Is it the back of the shoulder, top of the shoulder, front of the shoulder, or the whole shoulder in general? Regardless, it could be routine muscle fatigue, poor mechanics causing stress and discomfort, or something more serious.

Give a couple days of rest and if the pain persists or returns, reevaluate her mechanics and take her to a doctor for an exam.

Video her pitching from the catchers point of view and make sure she is not rotating the ball too early in her wind up. Rotating early puts extra pressure on the shoulder and lats, especially when the pitcher tries to "muscle" the pitch instead of "whipping" it. Rotating early tends to get the arm out of its proper slot for BI which forces the pitcher to "muscle" it.

Sorry....I couldn't help myself!

JAD - you just sent me down memory lane on YouTube!! I'm always singing the line "Crack that Whip" from Devo when DD is out pitching in the back yard but hadn't watched the video in years...thank you!

Man10 - my DD has had sore shoulder muscles that were full of knots in the past, primarily when she was "muscling it" and trying to roll the shoulder. Like the others have already said, rest for a few days and reevaluate the mechanics to see what is actually happening. Good luck and hope it's only temporary!

Every day of my life although in my case it's age. Man, there's a difference between sore and pain. WHERE in the shoulder is it? Front or back? what you are describing sounds like someone who's arm is far away from their body at 12:00. But it's impossible to diagnose without seeing it. Anyway, my point is, make sure she understands the difference between sore and pain. Sore could mean a few days off. Pain may mean something is WRONG.

Thanks, I think it is just soreness. Not sure what started causing it all the sudden but it seems to be ok now. Probably just jumped the gun.

I have. Kids a stud.....Probably just a little soreness. No arm issues at all.

Then I don't want to see her. I hate seeing kids who look better at pitching than me. And that list is growing more and more daily.... not that it takes too much.

Man10 what do you mean "jumping the gun"? Doing too much too soon or worrying about a little soreness?
