DD is 10yrs old. We were at a tryout and DD was pitching for the coach. She was throwing hard and it was the fastest Ive seen her throw. After a couple pitches she said her shoulder hurts and we stopped. Her arm had no pain when at rest. So I gave her a couple days rest and we tried to do some light overhand throwing and instantly she had pain so we stopped. I took her to the doctor next day. Doctor says shoulder strain and says no throwing for 2 weeks and to start lifting weights and bands to strengthen shoulders. I've found some shoulder exercises online and that what were doing. If anybody has advice or thoughts please feel free to share

Coming from a family of 5 collegiate pitchers, I always recommend a little more in depth imagining when a pitcher's arm is injured. It's very hard for simple hands on diagnosis, or simple X-rays to determine if a muscle/tendon is sore, hurt, or torn.

My daughter hurt her shoulder pitching, only way they found the tear was a dye test MRI. Lucky it was small enough no surgery was required, just a few months off and then the long road of PT.

My nephew is in his junior year of D1, hurt his throwing arm his sophomore year. Again only found the problem through an MRI. He had to have surgery on his bicep.

I know finances and insurance come into play, but if you have an athlete in the family, it's best to find a good doctor who specializes in Sports Medicine. They are more trained to detect prone injuries of athletes, and are a good investment over a child's playing career. Many times your GP can refer you to a good SM doctor.

I know it's hard for a 10 year old to relay if her shoulder is sore OR hurt, so just keep an eye on it. I hope she recovers soon.

I would say that joint pain of any sort in a young athlete is unacceptable and you need to find a specialist who can really figure out what is wrong. And, no young athlete should ever play through the pain unless the source is pretty clearly something like a loss of skin due to sliding.

I'm certainly not basing anything off what is said here. I just was looking for thoughts and opinions on what we should do or if anybody has went through something like this. I'm very worried about what is going on. DD loves to pitch and that has increased her passion for softball. She is very concerned that she will not be able to pitch or play again. I guess right now we are at the mercy of her pediatric doctor. My insurance wont let us see a specialist without a referral. So right now we are doing stretches and exercises and taking that approach per her pediatric doctors orders.

Can you ask her doctor for a referral if the pain doesn't clear up fairly quickly? When my daughter had some knee problems, I ran across one website that basically said that all joint pain in children should be taken seriously, and I will venture a non-medical opinion that shoulder pain, like knee pain, is not right in a child or teenager.

I'm sure I can push him for a referral. That's why I made this post just to gauge how bad this is and if anybody else has went through this. So far the consensus seems to be this is bad. I did question the doctor when he said she would be alright in a couple weeks but he insisted she will be fine. As a parent I want to trust what a doctor is telling me and I know their not always right. I'm just confused on what I should do.
