Help me through this - dd's coach wants her to really focus on changing speeds on all her pitches. While I agree with this, he wants her throwing a super slow rise at 40ish. Her regular rise comes in around low 50's which is about 5 mph slower than fastball. She gets very nice backspin on it, but seriously at 40 how will that ball do anything but drop? Is it just that the backspin will give it a different look? I'm confused.

A pitcher throwing an off speed riseball needs to buckle the batters knees with deception, because there is a good chance the pitch is going to be FAT!!!

Don't you need the speed in order to achieve correct backspin? Just curious…Wouldn't that just be a high changeup? My daughter used to throw a flip change with the backspin…it got hit too many times because it was left high… She is having more success with a drop curve change up.

Her coach sounds like he has some learning to do about the physics of a riseball.

This a thousand times. What would a 40 mph rise ball look like? The amount of spin required at that speed is beyond human limits.

A high ball is not a riseball. A pitch thrown at that speed would be a high arching parabola (in order to reach the plate).

IDK, the key to me seems to be ALL her pitches. Seems to be trying her to get a good feel of the ball.

I will be moving out to the parking lot to catch it if she throws it in a game though.

How fast is her change up right now? if she is throwing 55 and her rise is 50 isn't her regular change enough for him? will he even know the difference if she throws her change and says it's the slower rise?? ;)

Have her put a postage stamp on it...

A 40mph rise is a flip change... that needs another postage stamp... right up there with a knuckle change.

Your dd's rise spin is very good. Focus on maintaining that for now.

Alternatively, he could just put the ball on a tee for the opponent... ;)

As far as throwing her off speed rise (50)... at her age you probably won't get a lot of use from it... unless there is an absolute stud at the plate. As hitting improves, off speed becomes a great tool for disrupting timing... but against weaker batters, you're simply giving them a better chance.

A 40 mph riseball will RISE off the bat and over the fence.
