The Dictionary explains it as pronation or eversion is the inward roll of the foot (medial malleolus) while walking or running. As another way to look at pronation instead in terms of the degree of inward roll is in terms of where the foot pushes off at the end of each step, or at the end of the gait cycle.

DD advised that due to her ankle sprain when she pitches or walks her trainer says she does not pronate her injured foot or her drive foot, he advised it will not get better until she is able to stay off her foot an it is the middle of the season and she pitched 5 games in 3 days last week. She advised her shoulder is bothering her and it has never given her a problem before.

Just wondering if some of the great pitching instructors/coaches on this sight has experienced this with a pitching student and had any advise?

DD was running on our farm weeks before the season started and stepped in a hole and twisted her ankle. She has seen a doctor and wearing a boot when she is not practicing or playing.

Thanks ahead of time.

to "She was in a boot until it healed"...

My DD sprained her ankle about 5 weeks ago. It didn't get all swollen and black and blue like my ankle sprains from basketball all those years back so i told her to ice it and shed be fine in 4 days. 3 weeks later the pain was still there because while it would get better, it never fully healed and every time she pitched it just regressed. Two weeks ago i just shut her down and put her in a boot. I felt kind of silly because I think I used an ace bandage as the only help for my grotesque sprains way back when and I swear I was back on the court 4-5 days later but hey...it worked.

Jesus...sounds like your daughter is my daughter...

Rolling of the ankle usually causes an atfl sprain... or partial tear. Rest is key in this type of injury but even more important is making sure that she does limited range of motion strengthening exercises... like bands. Eversion or inversion of the ankle is movement outside of the normal range of motion... so it's important to strengthen inside the normal range of motion. The peroneal tendons are your lateral stabiliziers... and they weaken significantly after a sprain. Timetable to rehab the strength is usually four weeks.

As far as shoulder soreness... usually the rhomboids weaken to the point where the humeral head "drifts". This increased laxity in the joint causes soreness from impingement... dangerous predicament. Best to ask where in the shoulder she is sore... and go from there. The importance of a band routine and "shoulder back" posture awareness (when sitting, standing) is so important. Look up winged scapula condition... pretty common with kids that have been pitching awhile... leads to protracted shoulder girdle... which leads to all types of bad stuff. Not saying this is what is causing it... but just thought I'd throw that out there... as catching something like that is pretty important.

Already know JJ's DD is my DD's twin... looks like she has another. Shut it down and build up stability gradually.

I was totally going to mention the joint laxity due to humeral head drift caused by weakened rhomboids...you beat me to it again JS....damn you type fast.
