I don't understand this at all and need someone that can explain it to me. My DD's whip is all over the place but coming down with each game she pitches. She faced 138 batters this fall, had 6 walks total and 10 SO total. Her strike % avg was .650. So what does WHIP mean and how does this come into play?

WHIP = (walks + hits)/(innings pitched)

But, how old is your DD? What age bracket does she play?

ERA and WHIP don't have much meaning at 14U, 12U, and 10U. The scoring is inconsistent as well as the players. Even at the older age groups, you really can't compare ERAs and WHIPs between teams.

At the lower ages, you need to be tracking the walks and the number of hard hits (outs or hits, doesn't matter. If a batter unloads on a pitch, make a mental note of it). That will give you some idea of your DD's progress over a season.

Strike outs are "fun", but it all depends upon the level of the competition.

Sorry - with two teenage girls in my house, those are the only two words that come to mind when I hear the word "whip"

She is 1st yr 12U, playing strictly A. Her weak hit average was .787% and hard/line drive hits were .213%. So I am getting I don't need to worry about whip right now?

You didn't list how many hits or innings?

A WHIP under 2.0 is pretty good, under 1.0 is great.

Pretty good WHIP. Just from the stats, areas of improvement I see is a better strikeout to walk ratio. 2/1 or better. At the younger ages 3/1 or better. Also opponents batting average is around .312 which is pretty high.

Another stat to look for that is telling is swing and misses (SM). High SM means: good speed, movement and/or changeup and off speed. I see a lot less SM and strikeouts in 14u travel ball unless the pitcher is throwing 60mph or the team batting is below average.

Thanks for the input. She is an 04, 1st year 12U playing strictly A and probably 95% of the teams we get to play have been top level '03's. It's all a learning experience!
