And people wonder why the NPF is circling the drain with her at the helm. The rule has not changed, it is not ambiguous yet suddenly the umpires are able to see and call Barnhill for IP's. What happened? Free Lasik in the off season? Yet another season with NCAA softball looking more and more like WWE.

yep. all of a sudden, the umps see and CALLs the IP. i really wonder what triggered this. was it coach mike white's comment from last year?
it should be interesting to see if this trend continues throughout the season.

The only thing that has changed is the penalty which greatly reduced the courage required for them to do their job.

Maybe the quote of the year. If I could fit that on a T-Shirt I would do it yesterday. Well stated as always Rise.

On another note, I swore to myself I would not post and stay away from this thread this year........maybe next year..:(

Couple of weeks ago Barnhill threw a no-hitter against us in Gainsville. She's definitely impressive. The umps did actually call in illegal pitch in the game, but it was on my DD.

Tonight Florida is at home to USF. And just as I thought, there was no IP pitched on the Home team pitcher. So Walton Intimated the Umpires NOT to call any IP on her. Florida won 9-0. I was hoping the tide was turning and IP were going to be called MORE. But NOPE. I could only watch one inning. I don't know what was more annoying Barnhill pitching or the amateur announcers praising Barnhill. It was like watching WWE when you know the outcome before it even starts.

I guess I will watch Barnhill pitch during away games and cheer on the officials to call IP. I will always pull for the opposing team.

Considering she's probably the #1 for Team USA, and International softball allows leaping (forget crow hopping, many umps can't tell the difference anyway so they just let it go in ISF play) I doubt Eriksen at USF (and USA coach) cared either way if they called IP's or not.

Admittedly, I view crow hopping differently than 99% on this forum. But watch a high level men's fastpitch game sometime THEN talk to me about crow hopping. And no, it's not legal. It's just the men don't care because the ball has to cross the plate. And if you're striking out because of the pitcher's motion, there are bigger fish to fry for yourself than whether or not the guy crow hopped. Why is it one gender gets so uptight about it and the other doesn't?? Is Barnhill (who hops) throwing harder than Abbott who doesn't? No. So, it's not the hop that you should be worried about. I am not suggesting that you teach anyone to pitch illegally. I'm suggesting it's time the rules changed. Either that or go back to wooden bats.

Bill,

We just had rules training for our travel coaches...

Straight from an Olympic certified umpire who does ASA National and NCAA games...

This is what he said regarding the "feet"
It's not a question of the motion or the body movement being a distraction. It's a question of 1 of 2 things: It's a question that if the drive leg is NOT in contact with the ground, there is no resistance and therefore that is deemed to be an advantage to the pitcher and therefore illegal. OR It's a question of re-planting and that means they are effectively driving from a position that is forward of the pitcher plate and that is deemed to be an advantage to the pitcher and therefore illegal. That was his message to the coaches.

My stance is this: if it's in the rule book...call it! If I am driving 85mph on the highway and the "rules" say the limit is 65, I SHOULD be penalized. I should get a ticket.

I'll end with this...If you aren't going to call illegal pitches then don't call runners for leaving early or slappers for having one foot out of the box...CP

I guess my question is this, if it's an advantage why has it only creeped it's ugly head in the last 15-20 years? I'll tell you why... composite bats and polycore balls. The pitcher needed something to regain the advantage of a popfly being a HR. Second, even the top pitchers in the last 10 years are not hoppers so why aren't they hopping or even trying to get away with it if it's an advantage? Ueno, Abbott, Finch, Tincher, Osterman (ok, she leaped didn't replant) Michele Smith, Michelle Granger, etc. None of these ladies did it. Neither did Mike White, Pete Meredith, Kevin Herlihy, Ty Stofflet, etc.

My stance is this: if it's in the rule book...call it! If I am driving 85mph on the highway and the "rules" say the limit is 65, I SHOULD be penalized. I should get a ticket.

It's hard to argue with that logic. Which is why I feel like Chicken little screaming that the rules need changed to keep up with the progression of the game

I'll end with this...If you aren't going to call illegal pitches then don't call runners for leaving early or slappers for having one foot out of the box...CP

Again, hard to argue. I still say it's time the rules change. By the way CP, it's not even 11pm and you're posting on here, shouldn't you be giving lessons!!?????!!!

I know some of the umpires that do Florida games and they admit that it is Tim's way or the highway.

My problem with leaping is- that my DD has worked like crazy to be legal. She naturally leaps a couple of inches off the ground. I don't think leaping is a big advantage unless you are training against what's natural. My DD speed is about the same either way but we have spent a lot of time being legal.
