True or False?

If a radar gun is placed at an angle slightly off of dead on with the flight of the ball it will always give a false LOWER reading than it would if the angle was directly in line with the flight of the ball?

It helps if you "shove" the gun forward when the ball is mid-flight. She'll pick up 10mph for sure!:p

It won't always prove slower. Cosine effect will determine. 65 mph at -7 degrees equals 67.4mph. At +7.0 degrees it's 61.6mph. But yes if not straight on the reading is off.

I've heard at camps coaches say to pitchers add 3mph to the reading. It's a wild rear guess or WAG as to their offset.

True, always lower, there is no angle where the the reading will increase. The only way to get it to read faster is the grandpa lunge.

My Stalker II has a setting to adjust for being off angle. As a result there is no need for the Radar Grandpa lunge. Just set the angle to the highest setting and get directly behind and your DD will instantly pick up several MPH. :)

I have a question, if I stand up and hold my pocket radar at my eye level behind the catcher, will that give incorrect readings? That's what I've been doing, readings don't seem all that off but just asking. I know I'm supposed to hold it a little lower in the ball flight path but I forgot. I was just wondering if it makes that big of a difference where I hold it height wise.

Quality of the gun matters. Bushnell comes to mind ;)

IIRC, the cosign @ 60* is .5 meaning that if you are at 60* you are reading 1/2 speed. The cosign @ 0* is 1.0 meaning you are reading true speed. Use that info to judge your angle and how it might change the reading.
