OK so my dd picked up a ball for the first time last Wednesday since all-stars which was July 8th-9th. We practiced pitching for a while and she said her arm hurts a bit. So we cut it short. Then practice a little on Friday, but was OK, pitching sucked, but arm was fine. Then Saturday we had tryouts. Afterwards she was saying her arm hurt a lot. We iced it and gave her some Motrin. We haven't practiced since Saturday. Question, because of the long rest and not working the muscles on a continued bases, could this just be soreness or should I take her to the DR?? During all stars she pitched 5 games on a weekend and was fine after a couple of days off and rest. My thought is just to have her stretch more prior to practice, or we just start off slower than before?

Has anyone else had this experience? Soreness after a month off of pitching?

There are some small muscles inside the shoulder that can get messed up if someone tries to work thru it. Nothing wrong with a Dr. saying to rest it and then do the alphabet L's, T's, W's and other pt warmups on a consistent basis.

edit: Nothing wrong with having shoulder warm ups prior to throwing. Actually probably for the best. Mine does them daily whether throwing or not. Takes 5 minutes.

She needs to stop pitching and get into a doctor. It's probably just sore, but it's not worth taking a chance and having it be something more severe. Many of us have been there and its not fun.

My DD has a continued problem with her rhomboid muscle. Physical therapy has helped a lot. Reducing how many games per weekend she pitches helps to.

WM- for comparison, my DD has never complained of shoulder pain. she gets an elbow stinger from too much contact once in a while. I don't think she has ever pitched five games in a weekend though. I would take this seriously and see a doctor. Better safe than sorry. And next time her coach wants her to pitch that much tell him to abuse someone else's DD.

Agree with others, go see a doctor. Only time DD had shoulder pain pitching was when she pitched 3 games in a day including a 9 inning ITB (approx 400 pitches) and shoulder/bicep was sore for 3 days (Was fine after that).

This may be controversial but I think its important for pitchers to practice year-round to stay in pitching shape. In 6 years, the most consecutive days she has taken off is 2 weeks. She generally takes the last two weeks of December off and two weeks in summer. But we also limit pitching to about 30 - 40 minutes a session 3X a week and I try not to have her pitch consecutive days unless its a weekend tournament so the body can rest and heal itself on off days.

Knock on wood, she hasn't had an injury from pitching yet.
