So you might want to consider posting a correction to this post because it sure sounds disrespectful to the injured pitcher. Like you are saying that if only this WAY older, WAY more athletic, WAY more experienced D1 college pitcher who has faced 10x better competition than your DD had known what you are teaching your 12U daughter that this wouldn't have happened? I've kept reading hoping that that wasn't what you are saying?? I'm sort of flabbergasted and don't know if you realize that's what you sound like in this and most of the other posts here. Sounds like you are saying if your DD were in that circle she would have handled it way better . . . most all of our DD's were able to stop all the line drives in rec ball too, but just wait until you have a 15 year old ASA A ball player who is 6" drilling the ball back at her and see if you are posting the same crud.

re-read... you got it ALL wrong.

Totally agree. If Mike Mussina, a 7 time gold glove award winning pitcher can be drilled in the head with a line drive during his career (and he was), then it can happen to anyone.

Good point but know that earned the 7 gold gloves by not getting drilled by the line drives that he snagged.

Not one who spends much time separating fly poop from pepper, the pitch does not appear to be green enough. Looks to be a bit more yellow toward the red. It is bothersome to me that some girls who might otherwise wear a mask would opt not to due to be ridiculed by other players or even coaches. My DD does wear a mask (HS freshman) and has really not pushed too hard to leave it in the dugout (at least at this point). If the prevailing sentiment is that mask wearing pitchers are some how weaker players I would challenge batters to leave their helmets in the dugout and catchers to leave their masks and chest protectors (they can keep the shinguards) in the dugout and those coaches that wear helmets in the coaches boxes leave 'em in the locker room.

As a pitcher, getting hit is an inevitability. Fortunately, the vast majority of times it isn't life changing, but the risk is real.

And I think that's the whole issue with mandates or not.

On one hand some will argue it is an occurance that is relatively rare, most pitchers will go their whole career never being hit in the head by a line drive so there is no need for a mandate.

On the other hand some will argue that even though a line drive to the head is rare the consesquences can be life altering so they should be mandated.

I honestly don't know which side if the mandate argument is correct but I do know that when my DD is in the circle, she will be wearing a mask as long as she young enough for me to have a say in the matter.

Yeah I get that. My point was more to refute the crowd that says with proper training you can catch those line drives. I think we both agree that no matter how good your training or how good your reflexes are, somethings there is simply nothing you can do to prevent being hit. Training and reflexes can reduce the risks for sure, but they can't eliminate it.
