Here is a short clip (maybe someone can slow it down) throwing a drop in practice. Does her hand turnover fast enough?

Sorry the fence is somewhat in the way.

Does the ball spin well and drop? If so, then the cue is spot on. Focus on the result using whatever cue it takes to get it.

BTW, this kid gets better with every video you post!

She's really gotten great spin on her drop. It's the primary pitch she throws. Her hand naturally turns over, so I thought it should be the 1st pitch for her to learn.

Thanks Ken, she's really been working hard. She pitched a shut out in a B level tournament championship game 2 weeks ago. I was proud of her. This past off season was the 1st she committed to getting better at pitching instead of basketball

But, in reality it's the spin of the ball and not the turning over of the hand that makes it drop....right?

Yes, which is why many folks that pitch a 'fb' are in effect pitching a 'dropball'. Some folks just take it to the extreme and pitch their 'fb' at various pitch heights, and hence don't wish to call it a 'dropbball' when throwing it high in the zone ... but it is a 'dropball' none-the-less.

Your daughter's turnover action is occurring primarily after release. This same pitch could be thrown without the turnover gyrations.

FFS...you have no clue what you are talking about.

Yes, people throw a fastball with down spin. However, a drop ball with 2x or 3x as much spin as the fastball, creating a radically different fly path for the ball.

cbullard:

Your DD has a "floppy wrist". That is, she is letting her hand and wrist fly up, so she isn't the getting the big break on the ball.

Attached is the sequence of my DD's drop ball. Notice how the wrist is kept tight to the body and not allowed to come up.

Just like any pitch, the key is timing.

Calling a fastball and a drop the same pitch is nonsense.

Dearest Sluggers, your ignorance shines.

Once folks drop the term 'fb' from their vocabulary they will be much better off.

Of course folks can increase the spin of their 'fb' ... but that isn't what turns it into a 'dropball', it was already a 'dropball', but with less than ideal spin.

Sluggers, I noticed that too. That is something we're working on. So, when she releases the ball her wrist should be close to the body when the hand turns over?

Yep...her wrist is flying out. It is more about keeping the wrist down and close to the body.

Here is Osterman throwing a drop:

here is a little trick for you and her:

She shouldn't forget the way her hand is finishing. She is probably getting a curve drop spin, which is a nice pitch to go with the full fledged drop she'll develop.

She can develop feel for the movement of her arm and hand, and learn to create different pitches other than simply a drop and a curve drop.

FFS:

I understand what you are saying, but again, you don't understand pitching.
