This hadn't happened in awhile. A new student - 7 years old. The dad called me about how wonderful she is and he wanted hitting tips. The only time I could fit her in was Monday, a day that I take off. So, I scheduled her and another new 7 year old and then, a current student.

So, #1 didn't show. After 30 minutes, it started to rain. 10 minutes before the next lesson, I called the mom and asked "Are you near by? Because it is rainy and cold." She said "No, I am really far." What the heck? I canceled her.

My next lesson, was going to be a drive for me and lighting started, so I called and canceled that one, due to weather.

But, I don't know what people new to softball think. I guess I am going to have to start calling each family, like a hairdresser and dentist does.

Yes. There are 4 diamonds within 20 minutes of me. I drive between them, when possible - and in search of lights. So, my lessons were at 4:15 (no show), I waited 30 minutes at the diamond and called the 5PM lesson. (I don't think she was coming.) That would have ended at 5:45 and I had a 15 minute drive to the next one.

I tried to accommodate the new people by going closer to the Interstate. But, normally i have a new student meet at my neighborhood soccer field type area.

Like you, I give lessons on a regular basis. Had a new girl supposed to start last Sun at 9am, but a death in her family happened, I totally understand that one. The 10am girl was a flat out no show (Dad said "my bad, I totally spaced it")
So then as I'm getting the 12" balls out and picking up the 11" balls at 10:55, phone rings...its my 14u, 11am student. Something came up, can we reschedule for 3?...... nope. I went inside and watched softball on tv for he rest of the day.... feeling your pain Amy

Happens to me a lot too. Especially in the winter, if it's cold. People decide it's just too cold to go out and instead of letting me know they just don't show. It's bad when the class after them has already canceled and I could have had the class after them come out earlier, but instead they leave me sitting in the cold for an hour. People can be extremely disrespectful.

Complete pet peeve of mine.... In our modern technology based society, we can immediately upload photos to facebook or instagram, but we can't send a text message to the coach... I just don't understand it.

Our normal commute to clinics with Javasource are 4 1/2 hours each way. In February the weather report for the day of our clinic said light snow, which of course turned out to be white out conditions on our way back. It took us 8 1/2 hours to get home and we almost ran out of gas but it was worth it!

I have a dad who contacted me last fall about lessons for his DD. I didn't have a permanent spot but told him he could fill in spots. I sent him a schedule every week of the openings, then emailed and texted him 2-3 times a week of the openings and never heard back for 2 months. So I removed him from my list. He contacted me about 2 months ago asking if his DD was still on the list because he hadn't heard from me all winter. I told him, "No" I took off his DD because I hadn't heard from him in 2 months and I had made numerous attempts to contact him.
He apologized and and asked me to put his DD back on the list, and he would try to pay attention to his e-mails and texts. So I did. 2 months now and still I don't hear from him, whenever I send him openings. I ask myself, why am I the one working hard to get his DD into a lesson when apparently he isn't?

Amy - DD's pitching coach sends me a text message either the day before the lesson or in the morning the day of the lesson and you let her know "yes" or "no" if you can make it. Works well. If any of your students pay in advance for a series of lessons (I do that for 10 pitching lessons at a time) then charge the parent for the missed lesson when they don't give you any prior notice. If they are a no show and only pay you each time they are at a lesson, you drop them as a client.
