One other thought is to embrace the 2 step with high pointed drive foot. That fixes an incredible amount of issues/potential issues. For example, it is easier to stay square to the target if you do a complete weight shift between the feet vs. a partial. If that drive foot is weighted on the backswing, then it is easy for that drive foot to become a pivot point and allow your shoulders to open early. (Don't ask me how and why I needed to learn that ;)

Thanks all!

Lsjames, I was concerned about the lean costing her speed. She's 5'5 so she has to work to manufacture as much speed as she can. If it's not taking from her speed then I won't worry about it.

The swimming she does more sometimes than others. Her consistency has improved so much that I haven't mentioned it in a while. If she drives out straighter that should help with the swimming too. I will give her the feedback and let her try some things. She's got decent speed when warm (52-54) and tons of spin, she's just had coaches in the past try to work out that lean. Then again, she's had some try to break her of the whip too. Fortunately they were unsuccessful ;)

She is probably losing some speed from it then. One thing I have found is that by working on a pitch that needs a certain weight and body position to be effective, you can "sneak" changes in without them know they are being fixed. In my DDs case it was that she was too far forward so we started working on a riseball, initially as a means of getting her weight and posture with a little backwards lean at release in general. In your DDs case, maybe really working on drop would help her get more stacked. I am making the assumption that this lean back is not pitch specific and she does it all the time.

I have a girl that is so flexible, that her elbow bends at least an inch - backwards. I would like to see the posture of this young lady. Not everyone is able to do what she is doing and it is so much better, than bending forward. She may mature and get stronger core muscles. But, I like what I see for a 14 YO.

By the way, I see so many college pitchers on TV, that look like they have awful mechanics (to me.) There is one that does a full squat, every pitch. I make my husband come look and he knows nothing about pitching. :)

wafastpitch - does the lean to the right happen on all pitches or just on the screwball? I see a lot of RH pitchers who have a pronounced lean to the right in an attempt to get a better angle and spin to the screwball.

I've done that. When working on a fastball with a student that has too much lean back, I'll tell them to -think drop- while throwing the fastball. The ones that lean way back on their pitches usually don't lean that far forward on drops anyway, so it tends to straighten them out a little.
