Upstate’s Pauly Named to USA Softball National Team Coaching Pool

Spartanburg, S.C. – While the end of the 2014 season at Upstate will put an end to pitching coach Rick Pauly's collegiate coaching career, the veteran instructor will not be out of the game for long after being named to the USA Softball Coaching Pool for 2015-16.

Twenty-five coaches were selected to the coaching pool. The head and assistant coaches positions for all Women's National Team and Junior Women's National Team competitions, including all major international tournaments, will be selected from the pool. Coaches selected from this pool will have the opportunity to coach in some of the highest level softball competitions in the world over the course of the next two years. The USA Softball Women's National Team is slated to compete in the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada July 10-26 and the XV ISF Women's World Championships in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada in 2016 as well as a series of exhibition each year.

"I feel pretty honored to be selected, because the coaches are some of the highest level of coaches in our game," said Pauly. "It is a good feeling to be included in that group. It was something I have applied to before and was turned down. So, I was surprised and excited to be selected. I look forward to work with some of the greatest players in the world. I was looking for something to do in my retirement and I think this is going to keep me going."

Pauly is in his third season as the pitching coach at Upstate. He has helped lead a unit that has led the nation in ERA for two weeks late in the season and is third entering the NCAA Tournament with a 1.36 ERA. He has coached Anna Miller to A-Sun Pitcher of the Year honors and Lexi Shubert to A-Sun Freshman of the Year honors, while both were first team A-Sun All-Conference selections in 2014.

Prior to his stint at Upstate, Pauly served for one season as the pitching coach at South Carolina in 2009 and as head coach at Spartanburg Methodist College from 2004-09. A former men's fastpitch player, he also has spent a large part of his adult life coaching and instructing youth pitchers. His top student is his daughter, Sarah Pauly, who is the winningest pitcher in the National Pro Fastpitch league and was a Division I All-American at Texas-Corpus Christi.

Look at the amount of events and places the USA women get to go to, then look at the schedule for the USA Men. Seems a little unbalanced, no?
