Hi! Just found this forum this week, and have been trying to take in info. Here's where I am at:
My dd is 9, almost 10. She started pitching last summer in rec ball, very short rec season, pitched 2 games. Decided softball is her one true love, played on on c level travel team. She worked more on her pitching, with minimal instruction really did well the last part of the season. It all came naturally, her coaches were former college pitchers, but old school, since everyone was just learning there was a lot of talk of follow through, but it wasn't explained too much to her, plus they were trying to make sure their dd's improved faster than she did(didn't work;) ). She had 4 lessons with a private pitching coach, mostly working on her step as that was the biggest issue. Fast forward a few months.
She tries out for a b level team, makes the team on the strength of her minimally coached pitching(team is FAR better than her C level team, which she needs.). Anyway, we start lessons with the coach most girls on the team use. I now know it is HELLO ELBOW! And slamming the door all day. I would guess she has lost 5 mph on her pitch. After only a few lessons! I really don't for sure, but I went from wearing shin guards on the bucket to not caring, lol. We are done with that coach! I found the forums on Monday, watched some of the vids and realized my dd was naturally doing 80% of the ir stuff naturally. I am getting overwhelmed with all the info, could someone send me to the easiest to understand place to get started? Some of these reads seem really technical, even though they probably aren't.
Also, for my own curiosity, could someone post a video of someone doing hello elbow perfectly and one of someone doing ir perfectly. I just kind of want to see this for comparison sake to tell dd the differences and what to forget, etc. if you read all of that, thank you!

I think you found the right support group. My name is JJ and I am a pitcher's dad.

I don't know if there is a "perfect" example of any I/R pitcher. There are some that are very, very good though. I have three personal favorite pitchers. Yukiko Ueno, Cat Osterman and Michelle Gascoigne. I don't have a good clip of Michelle, but Cat and Yukiko are below. I have never seen a perfect full HE delivery, I think these girls get weeded out so early in the process they never get high speed video taken of them.

Welcome to the club. I will suggest some other threads for you to review.

*I/R in the Classroom - very good place to start. and very good drills to use as well.
*Comedy at It's Best! Hello Elbow - there is a rather lengthy video at the beginning of this thread, but the person demonstrating the drills does a very good impression of HE. Then if you choose to continue watching, he will throw full speed with I/R. Somewhat comical.
*Go to youtube and search for the Amanda Scarborough slo motion video. Excellent slo motion demonstration of I/R.

Good luck. You will find a lot of great advice on this site!!

Like JJ mentioned, finding video of true bowling/wristsnap/HE is tough. Here's a pitcher who appears to have been taught under this style, and demonstrates slamming the door:

She uses some whip/IR, but is missing her potential by a ton by trying to bowl/HE/etc.

This is probably really close to what HE coaches are looking for, or what they think their best students do. great video.

Does Cat know she uses I/R? I took my DD to her clinic at St. Eds the the other day and while she wasn't preaching HE, the pitching motion she was teaching was not I/R.

Is it possible that some pitchers stumble upon I/R as they learn their motion pitches and don't really know they use it?

Most top athletes, do figure it out. I was so surprised to see that my DD's hand, wasn't behind the ball, when good digital cameras came out. I thought she was doing something wrong.

from what I have seen of her teaching videos/clinics on line, she shows it pretty close to how she throws it, but if she does teach differently from how she throws she wouldn't be the first. The term I/R is pretty specific to this board, the key would be was she showing them to have a slight bend in the elbow during the downswing? Was she demonstrating the hand position as being under or inside the ball with more of a pull down the circle or behind it with a push?
