So.....Peel or Roll-over....why is one better then the other?

Had an interesting discussion with another parent at practice tonight. Both our daughters are pitchers on the team and both have different instructors that teach different things. My daughter was working on her peel drop and he asked when she was going to learn the roll over to which I replied I didn't think she ever would as her instructor does not believe in it. He responded that's crazy that the roll over is the biggest out pitch in college softball and that all the good pitchers use it. At this point I will let everyone else respond to see if I am crazy or not in letting her learn the peel drop.....I do not think so but respect a lot of the opinions on here. So have at it.

I think the "peel" tends to be faster and results in better perceived "late" break. The rollover seems to be a touch slower and the break seems less sudden.

BM is right, there is no such thing, however, the "rollover drop" has a higher release point and thus is perceived to have more "drop" then a true peel drop that has a lower release point. Smoke and mirrors.

No such thing as a "roll over drop"...........

Please - let's not start this old argument again.... There wasn't a conclusion then and I suspect no conclusion now.

So moving forward only for those believing in two separate pitches (rollover & peel):

I equate the rollover to a drop-curve. THis is because I have not seen too many pitchers execute the roll-over and get a pure 12-6 spin. It ends up being a crop. And I am NOT a fan of the crop for a righty pitcher.

So for me & DD it has been about the peel. We definitely see the better/later break. It definitely is a more lethal pitch. Especially when DD started to throw it a little slower than her full-speed pitches.

While I myself agree with most of what everyone has said so far, can anyone answer his point about it being the biggest out pitch in college softball and that all good pitchers there use it. This is again something that the instructor has told them I am sure. Thanks again everyone!

Twenty, I can't answer your question but I do have a comment.

After being around lots and lots of softball parents with paid hitting and pitching coaches, I chafe at any parent who thinks they have found the ONLY coach who has seen the One True Path to success. These parents buy into the baloney when the guy who takes their twenty dollar bills says "Stray not from my learned wisdom and your Daughter will be soon pitching at Oklahoma. Go to the other instructor and she will certainly face failure and scorn of all. I am the only true one, all others are False."

One instructor was probably taught a peel when she was a 10u and the other was taught a rollover, (which may or not be the same pitch), or if the instructor is a guy whatever videos he watched to learn about pitching in 1989 taught one vs. another.

My advice is to pay attention to Boardmember, Hillhouse, Rick Pauly and all the other people who post here and make up your mind based on what they say.
