Can't take away much from this video but I'll take a shot at why she doesn't look like she uses I/R. She is predominately a screwball pitcher so a majority of the pitches you will see her throw will have "hitch hiker" release action.....a forced motion that is just the opposite of I/R. If you can post a clip of her throwing a curve or drop out to a RHH I am guessing she will use I/R.
Anyone have a clip of that to post?

Also notice her 'fighting' her way to HE. The end of her follow through is more on her opposite shoulder and then she moves her arm across to the HE finish position. Watch the last few pitches she throws - it is pitch, follow through, and then move my arm into where HE instructors want the end position to be.

Also when she does through a screw, as Rick says - her screw is a follow through, thumbs up and/or out - so you wont finish this pitch the way you would throw a straight fastball and your follow through is very pronounced. Basically IR but in the other direction to make it screw rather than curve. There is some images in youtube of this pitch. 1:17 of this video shows the release

At 4:00 you can see I/R arm.

And at 0:12-0:14 you can see her illegally leaping :)

Left Hook,

I/R = Internal Rotation. Medically, it's also referred to as Medial Rotation. "Medial" refers to the mid-line of our body. So, i/r, or as I call it, m/r - is rotation in the direction of the mid-line. External Rotation would be the opposite... rotation away from the mid-line.

The i/r we refer to in the pitching motion is most easily identified, and initiated by the upper arm, and most visible in the bicep.

I give you this spiel because it appears that many associate i/r with the finish of the pitch... which is not relevant - but is typically the last thing we see... It appears, your understanding is in the works... and that's a good thing!

Take a look at these three vids of Nelson. The pitcher you reference is a great one... and as Rick noted, is a screwball pitcher. This release makes the finish appear HE, but if you watch the bicep - you'll see the i/r. I put a couple of the heavy HE finish screwballs in there as well as another pitch - so that you can see that Nelson does indeed use i/r in all her pitches.

For everyone else that is newer to the i/r concept - this is a great example of what NOT to focus on when learning i/r. We have a tendency to focus on the result of the arm movement, focus on everything up to release, and your understanding of i/r will come easier... After the bicep completes the 180-degree rotation, you can whatever you like... Heck... some do a faerie (fairy) wave... ;)

Nice and slow... easy to see...

Much faster... more difficult to see... but focus on the bicep rotation... you might catch it...

Hope that helps.

Jenny throws mostly riseballs (some screwballs, too), so she does not HE those, of course, but her fastball is all HE. She is not as dumb as everyone makes her out to be. The HE may be wrong, but she does practice what she preaches on it.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. However, take a look at the IR in the classroom thread. The first video is Jenny Finch doing a thing for the tv show "sports science". Im not going to say for sure but i would bet that she is throwing a "fastball" as she is trying to hit a glass plate for some type of psi measurement. This video very clearly shows IR occuring. Furthermore, i have never heard anyone say she was dumb. I for one think she is an amazing athelete and could only hope my DD has half the success she has had in the circle.

I have never seen finch throw a HE fastball either and the clip of her in IR classroom is clearly IR.

You're not wrong Boomer, until some incredible underground video surfaces... which... it won't. Unsubstantiated claims are everywhere. I've amassed an impressive video library over the years, and of the 92 slow-motion videos I have of Finch, I've never seen an HE finish. I'm double checking right now... and would REALLY like to add the HE fb she throws to my collection.

Your DD has a legitimate chance. Especially with that new routine!!! ;)
