Gotcha....I just don't remember anyone saying anything negative about LL other than the pitching machine used looked fishy. The sport needs all levels so girls always have a level of competition that suits their skill level. I loved watching these games, these are truly girls playing for the love of the game.

There is a 14 year old playing in the 13/14 year LL WS now. They are from Columbus, Texas. She used to play with my DD. She is 6'1.5" tall, and throws 60-65 mph - avg 63. Hits homers too. Unfortunately, I don't think she's going to stick with softball...she is also a volleyball star too.

I equate national level TB pitchers going into LL as "trophy hunters".

There - I said it....

;-)

Is it possible they're hunting something other than a trophy?

As others said, the chance to represent their town, play with their friends..in front of large crowds, get interviewed by the newspapers?

The LL tournament season can offer an "experience" that I don't see most travel players getting anywhere else

Had a kid like that on my DD's 18u team. 6 footer, left handed first baseman that could slam the ball. Went to the University of California on a volleyball scholarship.

Yes, I agree that LL gives a normal rec player the experience of their lifetime (potentially). Yes, LL is the boiler-plate for TB. etc etc

All those apple pie and Chevrolet thoughts involved there.

But I would challenge any accomplished national TB pitcher and mostly their parents to come on the board here and admit that every last one of ya said to yourselves "Ah why not get in there and go beat up on some rec players (and get that chance to be on tv and get that spot in a local newspaper that nobody reads anymore...)"

I am just challenging the TB-A pitchers parents here.

Hate blowout games, Always have, I did not go to the ball field to cheer for the other team. I would rather lose 3-4 than win 20-0.For this reason our 12UA TB Team will play 85% in 14A next year. As Far as pitchers Dad, When we play average or weak Teams I specifically ask not to pitch my DD,I never want her being able to Phone in a performance and still be dominant.

Well, to be fair, those travel ball "A" players must also play rec ball, too, during the spring because in order to qualify as a player in the LLWS tourneys, you have to play a certain percentage (majority) of the rec games for your LL. It's not like a LL can just go out and get a TB pitcher who just happens to live within the LL boundaries to play for their All-Star team.

Don't know if its nation wide but in our state you cant play select ball after july 1st and still do LL All star.so you would basically have to abandon your TB team right before Metros,State,Nats just to go play LL. Have not found a true #1 TB pitcher willing to do that. Also getting used to the innings pitched requirements frustrates them to no end. Both my DDs have been asked but it has never been close to being worth it. Neither of them could past leaving their Team when they need them the most.

I managed Central. We played Virginia and lost 2-1. We play some of the best ASA and NSA events in our state. The Virginia pitcher threw as hard as anyone we faced this year but did not have as good of control and movement pitches as the very best we have seen.

All pitches have an "arc". No pitch is "flat". The Earth has gravity.

If you would like to see if the ESPN gun is reasonable. Take video of the TV. Count the frames from release to Catcher. Estimate that to 40-41 feet (37-38 for LL). And do the calculation.

I did this in the WCWS and found the ESPN speeds were reasonable (The pitchers were throwing 13-13.5 frames on a pitch to the catcher for 30 FPS video, the gun was reading 64-66 MPH).

That can't be unless the gun is somehow recalibrated to account for the incorrect angle of insonation. The thing I don't get is that the incorrect angle should be producing opposite results? See my other post in this thread regarding angles.
