I have a 14yr old pitcher on our tb team who is struggling with her timing. Ideally, the ball should be around 1 o'clock when the stride foot lands, but she is closer to 3 or 4, and her speed and movement are less than desirable to be nice. I've made sure the stride is in sync with the hands and I have her driving out more than up. Now Im looking for possible drills to help correct the timing. Please and thanks, James

Coach James, I must be confused. You mentioned the ball should be at 1 oclock upon landing with the front foot? I was thinking it should be around 11 oclock???

I guess it depends on how your seeing the clock...
1 o'clock for me means just barley past the half way point, and starting the downward portion of the circle.

Too many variables involved and no absolutes here. Perhaps if you had video or explained what you're trying to accomplish I could help more. The arm speed, quality of the arm circle, length of stride, and speed of stride are all variables here that will determine where the arm "should be", but honestly, if other mechanics are correct, this is a non-teach. It sounds like your pitcher has a lot more going on.

You should be near the top of the circle at stride foot contact. Should you be at 11, 12 or 1 o'clock? From what I have researched there is no correlation between the speed of the pitch and shoulder extension. As I recall the average arm location was 168 degrees (with 0 degrees being when the arm is pointed down) which suggests an 11:00 o'clock position.

But since there wasn't a clear cut correlation between shoulder extension and speed it's something I don't focus on. I just want them to be near the top.

The position of the ball should be just into the downswing behind for the safest mechanics for the female shoulder complex. That would be 1:00 to 1:30 for a right handed pitcher looking in the direction of her throwing arm. That is the standard because there are WAY more RRH pichers than LH pitchers.

The clock is as the pitcher views it to make it easier for them to discern. Poop on making it easier for the coaches, we arent the ones doing the work! :)

I get the arm position... what I am looking for is a way to correct the fact she is around 3:30ish when the stride lands. Her arm circle looked a little short, she would come right out of her glove straight up. I now have her driving out towards the catcher more with her arms and it helped, but not enough...

This is just my experience with my DD, but she used to throw herself all out of wack because she tried to go from 0-100 mph with her arm circle. I stressed the word acceleration. Get this girl to feel that she needs to start with power...legs pushing...long loose arm and finish fast. Show her how to snap a towel. No Kidding. I did it with dd. She quickly learned that you have to accelerate through the whip... not start at full speed. If you do...the towel will go limp before the "snap".
