GVM, there's no question that SOME time off is important for pitchers. You need some total time off for recovery, and some off-season "time off" that you spend working on things you can't work on in a game. I suppose it really doesn't matter if that time is the whole winter, or if it's divided up and sprinkled throughout the year. Which one is more beneficial probably depends on the individual pitcher.

Even year-round play is typically divided into seasons. Does your daughter's year-round playing opportunity offer some downtime between seasons? Does SHE feel she'll be able to manage her workouts if she adds in those extra games? (I should have mentioned, her opinion in this is the most important thing). If yes, and if never trying year-round play is going to keep nagging at you, it probably can't hurt to do it for a year and see what happens. If it's terrible, just don't do it again.

i'm glad we took some time off this year, and used that time to get stronger and work on mechanics. she will play enough games this year,so we worked on conditioning so she would have the strength to play so many games. but you must be right carly, they must break those seasons up a little bit? because when would they have time to work on other pitches and stuff? what are your thoughts on speed training? long toss etc.? we don't always try to throw as hard as she can, because i think if she is always straining herself, she will end up getting hurt? so what we do is,if she is having a bad day, when she is not throwing that hard, instead of pushing it to much? we move on to spins,or other pitches,or sometimes hitting? do you think you should always throw as hard as you can?

I do think you should always throw as hard as you can. If doing so causes strain, there is probably an issue in the mechanics that needs to be dealt with. Do you have any video of your daughter that we could look at?
