If she's teaching "slamming the hips" yes move on. That being said you want your pitcher to be in position to field the ball once the pitch is gone. She's a pitcher until the ball leaves her hand, once the ball leaves her hand she becomes a fielder as my DD's PC would say.

Sounds simple enough to me, 'linear' could be one way to describe using open mechanics.. 'Full rotational' might be the coach's way of describing using 'closed mechanics.

Doubt if it has anything to do with 'slamming the door.

RMC, all this is describing how open the hips get during the motion up to the release.

The pitcher is on the rubber facing the catcher, that is ZERO degrees open.

With open mechanics, the hips open up to around 90 degrees (RH pitcher facing 3rd base) and the hips stay pretty much at that angle until after the ball is released.

With closed mechanics, the hips can open from 45 to 90 degrees during the motion but will 'close' to 45 to 52 degrees at landing foot touchdown.

The term 'Slamming the door' refers to pitching mechanics where the hips close back to ZERO degrees at release after opening up and requires them to throw around the hip at ball release, which is considered a very unsafe motion.

Hal this is the quote from the coach.

Email from potential coach quoted...

Full rotation is where they finish the pitch with their hips square to home plate. In my opinion it gets them ready to field a ball instead of leaving them open and falling towards 3rd base. Being able to field and protect themselves to me is number one.

Finishing in a good defensive position is certainly good. However, this quoted statement says NOTHING about the angle of the hips at landing foot touchdown or at ball release. Those are the issues here. AA good defensive position happens after the fact, hopefully.

We need those questions answered still.

It's too easy to get a wrong impression from having a movement described in words. I don't think you'd be out of line asking this coach and any other coach you're considering for a half hour consultation / mini lesson before you commit. You can get a real idea of what mechanics they teach before any harm is done, and whether or not your daughter will like their personality. You want to look for someone who welcomes questions and answers them clearly with solutions that make logical sense to you.

Thanks for all the input. I've decided to keep looking. Though I can't quite understand what she's teaching, she did make it clear that she doesn't teach open or linear. That's what my DD is used to and I think I should stick with the track she's on. It seems to be working for her and makes sense in her mind.

Again, thanks for all the input. Just wish we had more options around here...

I've never lost a pitching coach, but I did lose a kitty once. We put his pitcture on some fliers and asked people to give us a call if they saw him. You could try this.

^^^^that's funny right there....not helpful, but funny.

So wish us luck. Trying out a new coach tomorrow. She's new in town from up in NY somewhere. Comes highly recommended though. We shall see...
