VIDEO -The double pump and softball submarine wind up - a comparison

I would guess that 70% of young pitchers out there use the Double Pump wind up. AKA the 1 1/2 wind up. Drop the hand down and to the rear before starting the forward rotation. Here is just one of the things I teach those pitchers to do to throw off the batters timing.

Notice any difference in delivery time?? :) Oh yeah, I was trying really hard to not hit my $500.00 camera.

I noticed a violation of Rule 6.1.E, but that could easily be remedied without the swingback. Won't work for my kid who doesn't use that style of windup, but I could do something similar. I'll have her try it Wednesday at clinic.

Dont have a rulebook with me, probably referring to bringing the hands together for a second before starting the pitch. The ASA decided quite a few years ago that you only had to touch the glove with the ball as it goes by and that rule was satisfied. Sort of impossible to enforce, requires a stopwatch and so on.

Please note, this is done as a very quick 'Step style' pitch, not leap and drag. This is the second fastest wind up at getting the ball across the strike zone that I know of. Do this as quickly as humanly possible and you will cut the batter's reaction tim e in half.

Here is a statement from a 16-year-olds Dad. She learned the sub wind up from my book and then flew in twice to work with me on that and a few other things.

"Dear Coach Hal, Just wanted to let you know that Maureen has pitched in 3 international tournaments so far. She is undefeated and her era is 0.00 in international competition. The tactics she learned working with you are amazing. Most of the time the batters seem like they have been sprayed with freeze gel. The advice from your book started it all off and got her noticed by the top pitching coach in Canada. Thanks again for all the help."

Dan and Maureen M, Canada

Her Dad also added that his daughter was the first student under 18 yoa that instructor EVER took on.

In both wind ups;

The batter sees the ball come out of the glove.

The batter sees the ball drop down and to the rear.

The batter sees the ball start coming forward in the wind mill circle.

However, with the sub wind up,,, the batter just stands there waiting to see the rest of the wind up as the ball goes by for a strike!! :)

This is tactical pitching.

This is Sneaky Softball Pitching.

Bringing this one back to the top for Lozza. The double pump wind up is probably the most common wind up young pitchers use in the US.

Notice how similar they look at the start and then note how much faster the ball is delivered with the sub wind up.

There are a handful of thing that you MUST know to do it correctly for the fastest and best results and those thngs are spelled out in my book.

You dont use the sub wind up as your 'Bread and butter' wind up. Use it once or twice a batter and watch what happens. They dont know when to pull the trigger and start their swing.

Yup Hal that's what I'd call a slingshot pitch :) Just different terminology.

That's what Adam Folkard did in the first dig against Argentina yesterday. Gave me a double take!

If he stayed straight up and the throwing arm too, it was a submarine.

If he bent way over and the throwing hand went way low, it was a sling shot. MLBB calls a slingshot pitch a 'Submarine style' pitcher. They throw the only riseballs in baseball)
