I am a fairly new coach trying to teach proper fundemantels so as not to create bad habits. I'm not that great at spotting problems yet, I keep seeing people write about disconnection, shoulder disconnection, can anyone explain to me what it is, why it's bad how to recognize it ect..

Simply put, disconnection in the swing is allowing the hands/arms to either get ahead of, or behind the rotation of the upper body during the swing. If you watch video of a typical MLB player, you'll notice the hands, arms and shoulders more or less turn as a unit. That being said, there are times when disconnection is a necessary evil, such as trying to stay alive with an 0-2 count on a pitch that looks close. But that is the exception, not the rule.

So from the top of the head straight through the body to the ground is the axis, and the shoulders, torso, hips, arms, and hands should basically swing as one unit around the axis. If the hands get ahead or behind then that is being disconnected?

Mike.
I have hitting videos and dvd's and books. Over 20.

I would reccommend right view pro Instructional tape
baseball or softball one

And steve englishbey for connection, and some drills he does.

Between those 2 you will learn allot.

I will save you , the hundreds of dollars I spent on the rest of it from different people.

Thanks, I have already ordered englishbey's swing basic's. My daughters currently take lessons from a knowlegable hitting coach, but this will help me understand more when he is not around.

Thanks for the input.

As I see it, the hips turn a bit before the rest of the body. But once they've started, the rest turn together until it's time to take the bat head to the ball.

You're a quick study!:)

Can you please explain your version of taking the bat head to the ball? the biggest problem alot of the girls I coach have is that they use to much of there arms to swing.

Englishbey does a great job of identifying typical problems that younger kids tend to have. He covers disconnection in depth, and demonstrates drills to correct it. I would suggest spending several hours (or longer) studying his material. Then go to Siggy's site Siggy's Hitting Clips - ImageEvent and study the softball hitters.

You need to develop your own sense of what you are seeing in the elite hitters. What you will find is that even though people are looking at the exact same video, they seem to use a different language when describing it. What IS important is that you and your DD figure out in your own way how to emulate them.
