Extension, is this an action or a by-product of a good upstream movement

Bottom line is teach players to swing from the ground up. Extension is a byproduct of good sequence. Extension will be bad when the shoulders/hands are the main engine

Joey Myers talks about centripetal and centrifugal forces. One is drawing inward (centripetal) and one is outward/fleeing (centrifugal). The same way a merry-go-round works. The physics should result in extension without trying to hard.

This is the way I coach it as well.

I'll mention this again. The merry go round as it was discussed back in the day had to do with the hands coming into connection and then being thrown off. For those of you have tried to jump on a spinning merry go round, you understand. Active hands then come into connection, ride that connection for a very brief time and then are thrown off.

Back on the dirt...
We have a new coach in our practices that stresses extension by pushing the hands out to the pitcher. (He is not a new coach but new to the team.)

My feelings are if your mechanics are correct upstream, then they follow through is correct as well. Same as pitching. Getting the barrel on plane is the important part IMO. Not follow through/extension.

Thanks for the conversation.
