Awesome in practice, not so much in a game :(

Daughter looks like a superstar in the cage or during live batting practice, but when she gets in a game situation, she wants to stop her swing just after contacting the ball. It's baffling to me and since she does so well in practice, I don't know a drill to help her. She almost never strikes out, but the ball always just sort of dribbles past the pitcher or over towards first. Any ideas on how to get her out of this?

Offhand, it sounds like her goal in a game is to not strikeout. If that's the case, she is achieving her goal. Essentially, she is defending herself (or the plate) against the pitch.

See if you can find out what she's thinking at the plate. If she's thinking like I think she's thinking, she needs to change it. She needs to think more about attacking the ball, with the intention of hitting it hard. That means she'll miss more balls, and maybe strike out a little more, but when she does make contact she will make better contact and hit the ball harder.

Basically, have her focus on the process of hitting at the plate rather than on the results. That might take some of the pressure off and help her hit like she does in the cage or BP.

Now this is why I keep you around. I honestly never considered this. This is great insight, Ken. I'll have a talk with her and won't be a bit surprised that you're 100% correct.

Thanks!
