My daughter is hitting 500 three weeks into her 16U season playing a top notch tourney schedule but has about 30 percent strikeouts of total at bats. We believe that we have correctly diagnosed that she needs to be sure that she gets a good two eyed look and that her head must turn without excessive tilt. When she tilts her head her shoulder drops which of course effects her vision and swing. She is making the adjustment but when fatigue creeps in the muscle goes back to the memory. Does anyone have a suggestion of good drills to burn in the correct muscle memory for this issue?

Thanks

I do not at this time. However, in model swings post 37, my daughter's head looks like where Boccia's head is at contact in this clip. The difference is daughter (hits from right) is tilting her head sideways toward 1st base as the pitcher is releasing the ball as she is moving to toe touch. I believe she is taking a more hinged athletic stance as she moves and her head is moving with her body. If I am understanding correctly she needs to keep her head separate from her body during this phase (almost as if it were detached). Hope this further description helps those of you with thoughts. If these thoughts are correct, I am hoping we can choose the right drill to burn the correct move to memory.

Thanks

First we teach balance and a neutral position in the box. Next take the back foot and move it toward home plate roughly 3 inches. This take the stress off of the neck so she can get a good two eye look at the pitcher/ball. To test it, and give her an idea of what she is doing. Take a pencil and hang a plastic golf ball off the end of it with string. Attach it to the center of the mask. She can then get a visual of where her head an eyes are focused.

Is she a low ball hitter?

She is better with the lower part of the zone.

You have to tilt and drop the back shoulder get to the low pitch.

However, you can take this too far (or not do it right).

Ryan Ludwick is a hitter who probably does this to too large of a degree and incorrectly.

Maybe her mechanics effect her head?

Anybody else here think that her left arm goes straight as she moves forward? Makes sense that she cant turn on high pitches as well this way, but can drop the bat head on lower pitches. Major league hitters are so strong , they seem to be able to lengthen their swings more than the average teenage girl. I am sure, that Ryan Ludwick is very powerful throughout his core and left side. With my kids, I keep the left arm more in the bent (frisbee) pisition, the way Susan Einquist (Hall of fame UCLA player and coach....winningest coach ever etc.) teaches it. Dont get me wrong, we know the bat needs to be back, (just behind the left foot), but with a straight left arm, her head may be looking to get out of the way when pulling the bat around.

When I cant seem to fix something, I look to something else. Her head may be moving around because her body is trying to pull the bat around on high pitches instead of pulling the bat knob thru and hitting from the inside.

Ok, my first post... dont beat me up too bad... just something I woud look at.
