Would you characterize this swing as making the elbow the pivot point instead of the hands?

That may be a decent way for some to understand it.

What she is doing to the forearm is what she should be doing to the bat.

She doesn't know how to send the barrel 'around' her forearm ... and instead sets up to send the barrel 'along' the her forearm.

The idea is that we want the hands to be the center of rotation for the bat, turning the barrel from launch to contact. In your DD's swing, the elbow is becoming the pivot point for barrel movement.

I came across this video recently. It might be helpful in understanding the concept of the barrel turning around the hands...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEAwd8LCBXE&index=28&list=PLLo_t691U8DVQCriImV9Kt44VdEI6iFir

My DD was about your DD's age when I joined DFP. I was overwhelmed by a flood of new info - especially since I didn't have a baseball background. My best suggestion is to spend a lot of time reading. Absorb, digest, understand. Swing for yourself so you can feel what people are talking about for yourself. WARNING...Take it slowly with your DD. DO NOT dump every new bit of info you learn on her immediately. In my own enthusiasm, I made that mistake. I was not a good thing, and lead to much frustration for both of us. The goal is to build a high level swing that will compete at every level of the game. This is a long term goal, not a tomorrow goal. No one is expecting an 8yo to have a swing like an MLB'er. It's a journey.

Like I said, she has a good swing that needs to grow. The fact she is so young, thin and flexible does contribute to the bat drag.

thoughts on this video?

The swing is not good. The swing will not scale. I have seen many people work on their swing for years and not make meaningful progress ... it is amazing how reproducible people can swing from year-to-year when they don't truly address their swing issues.

IMO...For the age, I would call it "above average", but with signs of good potential. However, unless there is a process of helping this young hitter keep moving forward towards a high-level swing, there are some issues with the current pattern that will soon become troublesome, and eventually become her ceiling.

I'll take your word for it that this is "above average" for the age. I haven't worked with this age group for a long time. The youngest hitter that I am currently working with is 10 years old.

I would recommend swinging PVC pipe. Maybe a 3ft chunk would do. The video Eric shared would be a great start. I'd agree that it's above average for the age as well. Looks very promising. Have fun!
