When does the batter start moving.

RDB is correct ... when dealing with 'timing' one should include the pitcher. Review the GIFs RDB posted ... the batter's sequence begins prior to the pitcher's release ... same for softball.

I agree with all who say it depends on pitcher and hitter. The gifs I'm sharing are of DD1. We break it down by "studying" when we got to gather and when our brain said Go! Totally agree recording with the pitcher in the frame. Most of time parents think it's all mechanical but could possibly be timing. I personally like studying missed opportunities.

But to answer your question, over the years we've used slow and early, pitcher driving out/we're loading up. The biggest problem I see in fastpitch and my DD is the lack of control of their forward move. It's a ton better than what it used to be but I think a lot of it has to do with trust. This is DD2. Slower pitcher, later gather. I think you have a great topic going. Timing is the hardest part of the game. I can't stress it enough to my kids.

That is a common issue for developing hitters. The 'move out' should not be 'about' momentum, but more a preparation for the torso-engine to 'pull'. It helps a great deal to have a handle on the main-engine.

Anticipation comes to mind in our experience.

In terms of the 'Move out' ... one should always anticipate that they will use their torso-engine. It should be a given. Failure to 'prepare to use the torso' increases the probability of errant swings.

I believe this can be understood when ‘gather’ is done on time, as well as walking away(momentum)from the hands/backside is done without ‘falling’ forward. Dynamic balance if you will. mo.
