A feeling of the torso/hip-engine creating a 'pull' from the lead lat is a good thing.

Those that by-pass such a 'pull' by actively using their arms/shoulders ... or that don't setup their torso during the 'move out' to perform such a 'pull', are missing out IMO.

Often you'll hear a 'fan', 'coach' or 'parent' speak of 'pulling the ball' ... and their particular notion 'pulling' is that of getting around the ball (so to speak). That is not the 'pulling' I speak of ... I speak of using the torso-engine in a manner that 'pulls' ... I can 'pull' the ball to any field ... over the right-field fence or over the left-field fence ... I 'pull' on all swings ... and those swings have 'direction'.

To answer the OP’s initial post …

'Yes' the shoulders turn … but you don’t want this to occur with ‘active shoulders’, but with an active torso/hip-engine. Using 'active shoulders' will bypass the desired action.

As for ‘timing’ … 'yes' again ... you are close to being on the correct path ... because this action is part of the 'timing' … but it is not the ‘shoulders being actively turned’ that is 'timed', but instead is about timing with an active torso/hip engine, which in turn ‘turns the shoulders’. Go forward ... i.e., 'move out' with a mentality of 'preparing the torso to pull' ... that is how one times an incoming pitch ... then 'twitch'/'pull'/'engage the torso/hip-engine'.

This is the drill i use for hitting the ball with the rear hip. It turns the shoulders.

I start most of these isolation type drills in the sat position, with tension already present. There are some things i might do different now with the bat, but im sure others will help with flaws with this drill;)

I place the ball inside or outside out front or deep for hips.

I think we are saying the same thing. Hold it until it's time to go but don't actively try to turn. I'm seeing a lot of kids get a good stretch but the bat is staying back while the turn is happening and now you have bat drag.

Please review the 'short hands' video. As the torso/hip-engine 'pulls', the 'short hands' action is in progress.

Get this happening and you shouldn't have a concern with 'bat drag'.

So you believe in pulling from the front side? That's easy for me to feel. I am right handed, but bat from the left side of the plate. So the front side is my strong side and it's easy for me to pull from that side.. however if I switch sides of the plate, I want to push from the backside more with little pull from the front side.

5frames,

I believe in the pulling through the torso/lead arm, although I don't think you can help the pulling. Meaning you can't really think about the pulling action or physically think about helping it out.

This is where things get a little muddy for me... if you are indeed pulling.. then why is there no action or mental process to induce the pulling? It just seems so intangible..
