I do what Harper is doing with a drastic change. I toss tennis balls up in the area of the shoulder while the hitter is in their stance. They have to hit the tennis ball with the knob. They can not push it away from the shoulder and down as Harper is doing. The reason I do the drill this way is that I want my hitters to point the knob and deliver the barrel. Typically, that knob travels about 2 inches and comes into connection with the shoulder complex when the drill is done correctly.
This is the best way to teach "Knob to the ball". When I got the opportunity to play for a team out of Baja California in my teens they would set up a high tee. Ball was set just to the left of the center of my chest. We would go "knob to the ball" and barrel would hit a punching bag. Sorry if it sounds confusing.

He's possibly thinking "Swing down to create back spin". Honestly, I don't know what his thought process is here but that's just a piece of his progression drills. I do know that it's clips like these that have ruined hitting in America. "If Harper takes the knob to the ball, I'm gonna too!" "If Trout says he swings down, I'm gonna too!
"If Arod says he's swinging down to the ball, I'm gonna too! IT'S THEIR THOUGHT PROCESS! I've had this argument numerous times and I'm sure a lot of you folks have too. Dad comes up to me and asks, what do you think of this drill? I say Garbage. Why? So I'll pop up a clip of a swing on my phone of let's say Harper... then I'll ask "where do you see him swinging down?" My argument is done by then but since Harper does this drill dad goes off and does it anyway. I'm sure most is out of context here but maybe I'm just here to vent a bit🤣

Harper does take a steeper(more direct) path to the ball than a lot of MLB players. Not quite like that drill though..lol
