Do the hands have to stay outside the toe line? When coiling, do the hands arc back or go straight back?

When trying to incorporate tip and rip/snap the barrel into the swing, during the tipping does the barrel go behind or infront of helmet?

I think the questions are related.(?)

In a video about front arm mechanics(which was very good) on another thread( maybe it could be reposted here), the instructor take two swings near the end of the video. One slow and one full speed. On the slow speed swing demonstrated, she tips the barrel behind the head and in the full speed swing, she tips the barrel in front of her head.

Was the ball position different in the 2 swings

If you are coiling as you move forward there is no loading of the hands.

They get where they need to be via proper hip coil

"When that front heel hits, I want the hitter ready to unload that upper half following the lower half or back hip."

Is that the feeling you want? Maybe the upper half has a slight natural recoil after the bow is pulled back (scap load??) but if you tell them upper half first it could get ugly. I think the feeling is lower half first. Are you a believer in small hand radius? I am. I dont think the hand move to much on a pitch center in. Of course they move some but I like the guy that says " you know what the hands do in the swing? They hold the damn bat". Also tip and rip is optional? I have had my DD playing with it and now she does it a little with no clue from me. It is a hard teach for most young (10-12) hitters.

"I don't care if the barrel head goes in front of the hitter or by the ear hole of the helmet."

Thank you for commenting on this.

RH, if you get a chance to watch the MLB Channel this morning, Mark DeRosa is commenting on hitting and he states several times, "the hands are along for the ride." DeRosa said that this is what he wanted when he hit. You can check it out if you want.

At about the 5:35min mark he states "obviously you try to use your hands when you swing". His focus here was more on the leg kick and getting on his back leg (a hover) ... something we discussed years ago after LC met Andre Either ... led to an interest in the Either drill (stork drill). He spoke of using the on-deck circle to get his leg kick timed with the pitcher. In this discussion he seemed to be stressing 'timing' over hitting mechanics such as hand usage. Just my opinion, but he sort of took the stance that he considered the use of the hands as a given ... and was trying to stress the importance of his leg kick and the sense of balance on his rear leg (hover). It was also my opinion that the phrase used here of the "hands go along for the ride" was more about "quiet hands" prior to swing launch and not about hand usage in the actual swing.
