Just wanted to open this for debate. In my experience.. yes. I've played fastpitch and slopitch softball. In my later years playing slo pitch I noticed swinging the bat harder by trying to knock it over fence generally ended up in ground balls and pop ups. Taking a nice relaxed swing resulted in many more home runs. Surprisingly, when swinging hard, even when squaring the ball up resulted in less distance and less home runs. Does loose muscles actually and not swinging so hard as you can actually result in greater bat speed? My DD has a tendency to over swing.

My thought process when playing was not to swing as hard as possible but to be as explosive as possible, if that makes sense. Of course I am desk jockey now like almost everybody else
on this board so my thought process probably isn't worth much ;)

I tell my DD to be quick/fast to the ball. IMO no one should feel like they're swinging as "hard" as they can but should be trying to swing as fast as they can. This may take a while for them to understand but when it finally clicked for DD the outcome was much more desirable. I have to remind my DD often that loose muscles are fast muscles and tight/tense muscles are slow muscles.

You know I have seen trying to be quick as you can, also can lead to muscling up.

I think slowpitch and fastpitch are two different animals. Slowpitch allows you to make a swing where you can build up to speed to contact.(similar to golf swing). Fastpitch doesn't afford that luxury.

Absolutely, That is what I was referring to when I wrote it may take them a while to understand the difference. WRT to my DD if she muscles up to swing she typically ends up with a push type swing which she can now identify compared to allowing the stretch to make the swing sudden. It is a process but IMO it is a much needed one.

Absolutely, swinging hard for example should be tried, or quickly or fast. Then you can work from there to see where the adjustments are needed. You must push the envelope every now and then.

DD has an effortless swing. When I see her swing I think base hit but she gets a lot over the fence. DD isn't big either.

NO you can lose your mechanics from swinging too hard, but if you mechanics are solid no matter how hard you swing it will get the job done.
Now can you swing as hard as you can and still maintain those mechanics is another issue.
