The initial 'winding' causes the front leg/foot to become even more closed off. Dixon was correct. It is not a 'falling phase'. Review the lead leg lift segment. Note the internal rotation. Later, the front-side opens in leading the way ... more of a 'falling phase' ... a phase that dominates the entire movement forward for many amateurs.

Even with the high leg kick, Donaldson keeps his front foot closed until his foot is about 1" from the ground. I dont think the front foot should open too soon.

I agree opening to soon isn't the goal. Which brings up the question of when does winding the rubber band actually take place? Is FbC the real loading or is it when the front foot opens?

I think of FbC as preparing your body to throw or 'the gather'. Keeping the bat tipped or at minimun vertical while slightly opening the front foot gives me a stretching/winding feeling.

Do you like the feeling of hitting with a closed front foot?
