I'm no instructor, but I see a lot more movement from other parts of the body besides the hands. So I would focus more on that, than just turning the barrel with the hands. For example, lower body, elbow to slot position, core.. etc. hands look pretty quiet to me in this gif.

The hands sense the barrel being arc'd ... many folks confuse this with the hands actually arcing the barrel.

The most evident thing to me is the elbow slotting. Corre/hips engaged, back knee/hip driving toward the front knee/hip. The hand movement seem very micro to me. I am not seeing that violent turn of the bat using the hands and the rest of the body reacting to it.

Some people want you to ignore what you see, and convince you that the hands are doing everything.

Some of these same folks earlier advocating using slow-motion video as part of their understanding of the swing ... but now reject it because the slow motion video doesn't support what they believe.

Take a tip from Tony Fernandez.

Whenever Tony lost his feel for a few games he'd bust out his long, heavy bats.

"When I use a bigger bat, it forces me to use my legs and body perfectly or else I won't be able to get it around."

That's awesome. And I know the hands play a very important part, but to only focus only on the hands and assume everything else falls in place is a mistake IMO. We have large muscle groups, legs, back, core etc which I want to teach my DD to harvest power and speed from.

Ha, you guys keep on keeping on dragging the bat with the body.

Hands turn the barrel.

So the only way to stop dragging the bat with the body is to turn the barrel? I won't be dragging anything..lol, my DD will be doing the hitting :). I just believe there are more components to hitting then "Hands turn the barrel". Yes I would like my DD to generate early bat speed and get the bat on plane deep and I know this plays a role. IMO amateur opinion I think "too much" emphasis on turning the barrel with the hands and ignoring other elements of the swing can be detrimental.

Julray..... The way one loads is VERY VERY important in how the body will REACT to the hands...... JMHO

That's good advice and I agree.. but the swing can still go to @!#% after the load.. right? The other day I posted a video of my failed attempt at turning the barrel with my hands. I got all kinds of questions about how I was loading, "are you coiling, are you pulling back" etc etc. There are things and other components of a good swing that are independent of just "turning the barrel with the hands". Am I wrong in saying that? I don't think it's enough just to say "turn the barrel with the hands" every time a vid is posted of a young hitter who is struggling to generate bat speed, square a ball up etc. Some would make it seem "Turning the barrel with hands" is the magic blue pill that everyone can swallow to solve their hitting issues. I just don't have faith in that approach. That's JMHO.

If you have good hands the rest falls into place. Many amateur hitters do not have good hands and it shows.
