Julray, I am also not a hitting instructor but many people say that you have to be careful watching slow motion video like the swing clip. The question that you have to ask yourself is..... Is his body moving in that manner because that is where his focus is...... or ..... Is his body moving that way because it is supporting what the hands are trying to accomplish?

That could very well be, I won't argue with you on that. But based on the GIF.. how do we know if this hitter is trying to turn the barrel with his hands or is that happening because of some other body movement? Does most MLB players think turn the barrel with their hands and the body will follow? Is this how they train? Based on this GIF, I am not seeing the violent turn of the barrel with the hands. Just my observation..

Cheers

Not here.

What other 'body movements' is this hitter using to deliver the barrel to the ball. Sounds like you believe that the hands are along for the ride. If you don't see it then, you don't see and that's fine. Just trying to understand....

The most evident thing to me is the elbow slotting. Corre/hips engaged, back knee/hip driving toward the front knee/hip. The hand movement seem very micro to me. I am not seeing that violent turn of the bat using the hands and the rest of the body reacting to it.

I try to look at hitting instructors work...... and if they look like they are doing the same as the professionals. Then I would try to find out how they are teaching their students.... With that being said IMPO I believe that Cano has a different look than most other hitters, so does Stanton. I am not saying that they swing the same, IMO Cano just releases the bat a little later than most. I do not follow Cano but from what I have seen of him I believe he is an out front hitter and may have trouble trying to hit a ball really deep into the zone. I would really like to see a check swing from Cano compared to other hitters. That may give me a totally different take on what I believe he is doing.

IYO does the flattening of the barrel help increase barrel depth? I ask because my DD hasn't been flattening the barrel as much as she did in the past. I never really noticed it before until I took some video of her from a catchers view point, it kind of reminds me of the bat path that I have seen from some ULL hitters in the past. It does vary some on pitch location. I find my DD likes for her hands to be further away from her body compared to most hitters and this may be why she tends to take a more "circular path" for a lack of better words than a lot of hitters. This is something I have been thinking about lately and wondering if she would get more whip if the barrel would flatten out a little more. If you are not sure what I mean by flatting, the two partial swing gifs that Shawn posted is what I am referring to the untipping of the barrel.

Edit: I believe Justin turner maybe a decent rep for what I am referring to. I seem to remember seeing a few swings of his where the barrel doesn't flatten very much, IDK just trying to give you an image to go off of.

Just wanted to give an update to the above. We received a suggestion from someone to tip the bat head towards the pitcher a little more that her bat was indeed to vertical. This made a significant improvement in overall contact and starting squaring the ball up much better. I do not really know what this action actually did..... maybe removed some slack but it definitely helped.
