Play a lot of HR derby at this age. Tell to hit it as high and as far as she can. Ask her to self toss when you get too tired to pitch and you can shag balls

Should we try and work on turning the barrel at this age and if so, what que’s or drills do you suggest? Today we did the step and hit drill for a while followed by front toss.

Place the barrel against the back of the neck and show her how to use her wrists to move the barrel off her neck without moving her arms/hands/body. Swivel the wrists to do this. Then have her start taking swings from that position trying to use her wrists to start the barrel moving to get it off her neck as suddenly as possible

It should look something like this

And in a game it could look something like this

Thanks, we will give it a try. The sad part about her swing is when she made the all stars in 6u baseball, 1 of only 2 girls , the coaches convinced me to make her stop “pulling off the ball” and stop turning her shoulders so much prepitch. In hind sight she was doing a lot of things properly, naturally and I successfully “fixed” what they told me to. I guess dd should stand for dumb dad in my case. Oh yeah, she barely hit the ball during those 3 all star tournaments thanks to all the things we “fixed”.

Not here.
Look...your DD is 8...8 yrs old.....All-star means not a thing now.....Front toss, Self toss, & tee swings. The most important thing is for YOU...Yes YOU.... to educate yourself on the proper/correct hitting sequence. You may disagree with me now but, possible as time goes by you will see what I was suggesting. I been there done that as they say. By the way DD is a Soph college softball DIII Athlete.

I’m not sure what in the heck your talking about. My point was that her all star coach 2 summers ago is the guy who put me on the path to screwng everything up, just passing on info on how we got to this point today. I believe if you try rereading my post I was asking for help fixing what I have screwed up. I’ve spent the last 8-9 months pouring over every bit of info I can find to do just what you suggest...educate my self. It’’s my fault originally for listening to the wrong people but I thought they knew what they were talking about. I’ve yet to disagree with anyone on here that’s offered advice and unless my memory fails this was your first response to my video. If me doing a little dad bragging about my girl making all stars in a baseball league that favors boys when she was 6 some how bothers you then pound sand pal and stop reading or responding to my thread. I don’t brag about her to other friends that don’t know softball or to the ones that do for that matter so, not sorry. Congrats on your dd’s success, I hope she excels. We’ve been doing what you suggested already with tee work, front toss and self toss. You tell me she’s only 8 but then say fix her sequencing. So which is it? Leave her alone or fix her sequencing? This type of answer is why people that don’t know are afraid to post on forums... she’s too young, implying leave her alone, but fix this...??? I truly appreciate anyone offering help and I have tried keeping everything simple in regards to her swing through out the end of summer and the fall season. We play some really tough teams in 8u believe it or not so I would like for my dd as well as the rest of our team to keep improving to get ready for the spring season that is just around the corner. I feel like everyone is really focused on sequencing and ttb so we will try and work on those things.

Sorry, I have a short attention span..Not reading all that. Do what you want.[/QUOTE

Maybe you can post on a short attention span forum and find some drills to work on that. Just don’t ask any questions or post anecdotes or you will receive no help.

Ok you want a long attention span on an 8 yr old .....ok here you go....
Fix the 'sway back'....learn to coil.

Dropping her hands and a push swing...and other things.

I don't like to critic an 8 yr old swing, because I find that most are over 'coached' by dads who think they know. JMHO.
Most posters don't like me on this site and other sites. I'll add you to the list....

Okay... I realize that your asking for advice from the top hitting coaches in the country, but trying to flame someone, especially when you have no clue, is not a great move let alone a good one. If you want help, ask for it politely. When someone on here makes a statement such as your DD is only 8 years old, take it with a grain of salt and move on.

Many of us on here are only trying to help everyone else. My DD has had major D1 offers because she was a true hitting catcher due to the advice on here but chose to play D2 because that particular college met her geographic requirements and most importantly, had the major she wanted to study. So, to try and flame ANYONE that is only trying to help you in the long run, is not only counterproductive, but will shut this thread down entirely and you wont get the help you desire from the other members.

That said, rdbass is entirely correct in his assessment. Your DD is only 8. You will do yourself a much better service in the long run in understanding what we are talking about as far as the HL swing will do for her and how to get there through proper instruction from yourself. Remember, YOU'RE her hitting coach. Yes you may take them to someone you MAY think that they know what they're doing for a half hour a week but YOU spend 3-5 hours a week with her and need to know what actually needs to transpire to get there.

AGAIN, your DD is only 8. You have many hours to practice to get her to the NPF over the next 10 years. But you have to realize. it's not about you!!!! It's about the journey and how you spend time in that journey through the Softball life with your DD!!!! If you don't know what you're talking about, which I'm sure you don't, then it may be time to re-evaluate what your priorities are. Get over yourself.

And that's how you flame someone politely and properly. If you are acting like an idiot, we will show you to be one. You don't bite the hand that feeds you.

I don’t care who it is, if I can’t respond in the same manner as someone addresses me then I’ll go elsewhere. I couldn’t care less if my dd plays at a higher level, I just asked for advice on what to work with her on because we do have plenty of hours, days, years to work and I would rather not work on the wrong things. She will ultimately decide if she keeps playing in the future, not me. How are you so sure I don't know what I’m talking about? Because I don’t have a dd playing college ball? If that’s the yardstick by which you measure others then I believe you are mistaken. My priorities are to have fun while she still wants to play and give everything I can to help her succeed. I have plenty of other hobbies that I have gladly put aside for now so that I can be a part of her softball journey for as long as it lasts. There was no hand that was feeding me in regards to rdbass. I simply asked for some advice, got some good replies from others, posted some back ground and then got a reply from him that rehashed what others told me to do but acts like I’m an idiot. Honestly, at what age should we work on her swing issues? Shouldn’t I try and correct things before they become ingrained in her swing. I really am aware that she’s young and has plenty of time to figure it out. Maybe it seems like too much at this age but we play some teams that practice nonstop, year round and have their own indoor facility. We will never be nor aspire to be that dedicated at 8, she plays other sports. 8u has become serious business in the last 3-4 years around here. Thanks for your input.
