Was looking for info pertaining to leaning back in the swing as show below. I see great hitter that assume this position while others they are more balanced/stacked at this same point in their swing. We have players on our team that are leaning back (per their instructor) but haven't been told why and are popping up most of the time.

My first thought is...I would completely get rid of the notion that anyone should be "leaning back" in their swing. Those are not words I would want planted in a hitters brain. If you look at the head of the batter in the pic posted, it is clearly between the batters feet...slightly behind center to my eye, and her back foot does not have a lot of weight on it. Her head has not traveled very far from where it started (assuming it was pretty well centered). IF you instructed a hitter like this to lean back...I think you would see the head directly over the rear foot, and that rear foot would have a lot of weight on it...and yes...that is terrible instruction. However, what I see in this picture...and what I think you are trying to achieve...is a body that is fairly well centered/balanced between the feet...and a back side that is pushing against a front side that is resisting that push. If you had video of the full swing...I would hope that once the front foot is planted and she is launching the swing...there is very little movement or change in the positions of the front foot and the head. The head will likely push backwards a little bit...but I would certainly not think of the hitter as leaning back and I wouldn't want them to have that as part of their thought process either. I would instruct to focus on a firm front side and a "quiet" head.

Edit...there could be some terminology misunderstanding here too. Some refer to that frontside body angle as "tilt"...which makes sense to me...I could see a player hearing that as "lean"...or someone using the term lean as opposed to tilt. there is a difference....to me "lean" is a verb...an action the player is taking..."tilt" describes the body position as not being a straight vertical line. the body is tilted...not vertical...but you don't want the player leaning in order to achieve tilt.

In a good swing, it's not uncommon to see a rearward "lean" of the torso. Done correctly, this is a result of pulling with the muscles of the back which contributes to an explosive swing launch.

I prefer the phrase "pull back" rather than "lean back".

Makes sense now but they had us confused by referring to leaning back. I will have to look into the technical hitting threads but if anybody has any links to share for more info would be appreciated.

Look at video of top MLB hitters, and begin to understand what muscles are being used to create the "lean".

What muscles in the back are pulling 'back'? What part of the body are these muscles pulling 'back'? Back where?
