Hardest thing to change is going from
  • a hammering top hand where the hands and upper torso are connected
  • [and instead have] a swiveling rear hand which is connected to the rear leg.

1. I kept reading this sentence multiple ways - I think the line breaks / re-wording is how I'm supposed to be reading this?
2. If the hands are not supposed to be connected to the upper torso, is the goal to still keep the hands by the rear shoulder during the "swivel"?

Thanks,

Gags

I just answered in another thread that I agreed with Drood that turning the barrel continues to load the rear leg.

To answer #2 above - the goal is to turn the barrel immediately to create a rear forearm axle for the barrel to turn around. Pitch location will determine how long the hands appear to be linked to the rear shoulder.

I wouldn’t try to evaluate any swing from a side toss. Side toss has its place but I’m not a big fan of it. In your vid she has no time to get any momentum going forward which causes her to lose connection between hands and shoulders early. She had a nice gather but then stays back instead of going forward and getting into front side

I agree with Cornbread about evaluating a swing with side toss. I love the side toss drill for timing and a good workout. I have seen a lot of coaches actually do it what I consider the wrong way as they toss balls too quickly and the girls just end up waving at the ball instead of taking a good cut. I like to get a good rhythm going to get a good workout but making a good swing from a set position.
