I've always loved Edwin's swing. Here's all 39 in 2015. One thing I noticed is Edwin is completely square with the pitcher on almost all 39 home runs, hips, shoulders all square with the pitcher at contact. on the outside pitches he just seems to tilt a little more, but he's still square

I welcome seeing video supporting the above statement of HRs with hips/shoulders completely square at contact. The video I look at doesn't support that belief. However, I'm open to changing my opinion if enough data supports such a conclusion.

I could be wrong, but he looks pretty opened up here

You don't think he's turning the barrel here?

This "turning the barrel" can be a bit overcooked. On this outside pitch there was a reasonably decent core action to get the barrel started. The pressure from each hand is orthogonal to the handle, not down the length of the barrel. Use the core correctly, and apply pressure to the handle correctly, and the barrel will arc.

Just an FYI ... in this photo you selected I don't see the hips & shoulders as completely square.

If a goal of completely squaring the hips and shoulders at impact works for you then that's a good thing ... several years ago when I worked on such a goal it didn't work great for me. Instead I found it more important to focus on what leads to the hips "becoming" rotated and the functionality of the shoulders in the swing. A pure goal of squaring the hips/shoulders just didn't work for me ... but we're all different, and some folks respond well to certain goals.

p.s.

Julray, it was my belief that those that I gave such a goal of squaring the hips/shoulders at impact placed an undue emphasis on rotation. Your mileage may differ ... that's just what I perceived to observe with such a goal.
