This is a great pic to show side tilt.

There you go ... in golf it is referred to as "lateral side bend".

So let's dumb it down a bit.

Perform three lateral side bends .... bending back to the catcher. Get a feel for the contraction taking place.

Next perform three side rotations towards the pitcher ....

Pretty simple and straight forward movements.

Repeat ... perform three lateral side bends .... and then three side rotations.

Now .... here comes the fun part ... perform both a lateral side bend and a side rotation at the same time ... and at high speed. Do it for a short distance to capture the initial feel.

You are on your way to Pivoting the Swing.

She actually is tilted, only at the wrong time. Her head moves back over the rear hip. The posture changes to a tilt backwards during the "load". Also she does not tilt over the plate. Her shoulders stay level during the swing.

FFS,

It's so simple, but the lateral side bends + side rotations idea sounds great. I'm going to try this.

This is a similar idea to a couple of Wasserman's arm movements he shows (I forget what they're called, but one has the bent arm going back, the other up). In my experience, showing players these simple body movements can go a long way to helping them understand the complex skills we're trying to teach.

This is not to go against anything has said, but with your daughters swing she is stuck with having to get to the front foot to swing. This won't be easy to fix. She should start taking swings starting just on the rear leg and launch the swing before the front foot hits the ground. It will be ugly at first. Do it off front toss if possible. Or a machine. This will force her to be more sudden and figure some things out on her own.

I noticed no mention of the rear hip socket. What do you feel is going on in the rear hip socket during the lateral tilt phase of the swing? Are the exercises you mentioned just to help kids become comfortable with tilting or this how you believe it happens?

The exercises are not simply to help kids become comfortable with the motions. Performing both a lateral side bend and side rotation, at the same time, is a big part of what is taking place through the core and rear upper leg. There is a third action, but for simplicity I haven't mentioned it at this point.

Many folks teach the swing as "hips and hands" ... and for good reason. Get this right, and you'll see the "hips ahead of shoulders" action ... mainly because this is what is happening ... so we simply cut to the chase and describe it. The hips will lead through this effort of simultaneously performing a "lateral side bend" & "side rotation" ... and when you consider that as the "hips" movement that many speak of, then it is easy to understand the swing as "Hips & Hands".

Do you believe some kids will perform a lateral side bend and still not get their rear hip behind their rear leg? I feel like I can do it both ways. Is getting the rear hip behind the rear leg important in your theory?
