Work=wins … you have been attentively putting the pieces together. Your descriptions are good. I get a sense that you are swinging and feeling your swing. You get it.

I see the pelvis getting behind the rear leg.

Do you teach that action? Or do you feel lateral tilting the shoulders towards the catcher and opening the torso towards the pitcher will cause that to happen?

By the way I don't hate your description. I'm sure you run into a lot of kids who swing with all arms and never get their torso open to the pitcher. I feel that can really help with a kid like that. Another tool in the toolbox.....

Quick question....

Do you believe that the pelvic girdle, and rear hip are part of the "core" or not?

I am a bit sloppy here ... and have become sloppier more so over the years in this particular area. It isn't that I don't believe the glutes (medius & minimus) play a vital role, its just that I myself am not 100% convinced that they are part of the core. Rather than get into that, I simply give objective based actions and look at the hitter to see if I'm getting what I want.

I only asked that because several years ago I wrote this....

I still like what is said about the "bottom of the top, and top of the bottom", and the division being in the hip socket vs. at the waist.

So yes, the pelvis is part of the torso, and upper half IMO...this is why I believe the core is quite extensively involved in the resistance of [the] pelvis against the [rear] leg, and controlling/directing the lead leg while it's off the ground or unweighted.
IOWs, I don't believe it is an "either/or" type of thing when talking about using the rear hip and the core, but rather merely a focus thing on where we talk to our hitters about creating the movements we're looking for. The proper rear leg/hip movements cannot be a accomplished without the inclusion of using the "core", and I think using the "core" with the exclusion of the rear leg/hip ("their only use is to support the core" as I've read many times before) can be problematic in and of itself as well. JMO...YMMV.

I am not 100% certain of what you mean by the pelvis getting behind the rear leg. It is my opinion that the ‘gear’ action (think of the two gear image that was recently shown) with the gears being 'rotation' and 'lateral side bend', performed simultaneously, gives what you describe as the pelvis getting behind the rear leg. Is there something else? Yes. From an early teaching perspective though, I like to focus on this.

What we see here is the action I want captured.

To be perfectly clear, I personally view a third action in play. There is also an anterior tilt. I try to not over complicate matters and start off by attempting to help a hitter combine the 'rotation' and 'lateral side bend' actions. So my true answer is there is more going on … but from an early teaching perspective I break it down to 'rotation' & 'lateral side bend' … and then observe hitters as they duplicate the action. Quite often I’ll get the anterior tilt thrown in without requesting it.

Very nice!

Okay, now I'm believing you are Mudvnine. If so, then thank you very much for posting here. IMO this place benefits from folks like you.
